It was th e co ld , co ld , co ld -. It was as cold as a well d iggers to-t o in the Klo ndike, and wi nd y t o boot. But nieLher co ld, no r wind , nor ra in, stay the dedicated from their racing, or the even mo re dedicated fans, who huddled in the stands, suffering in the cold and wind to watch their h ero s. T he fa ns d idn 't watch t heir heros wanting. J eff Wright to o k the measure of the 125 Ex perts , Da n Hack ie d id th e 25 0 Experts, and T im Hart an nexed th e 500 class. Tim d idn't have m ech an ical problems like last w eek's fuel p ro blems and rode all th ree 5 0 0 mote s. T he o nly class o f t h e nig h t th at wasn' t decided in t he last mota was th e 500 Intermediate. Mike H igashi was th e o nly o ne in t he clas s, so he wa s a su re winner. That 's not to imply th at Mike wouldn't have won over a full field, in fact, h e was running right in t here with the Experts. Jeff Wright, in win ning t he 125 class, h ad all h e co uld handle in b eating Bruce Baron. J eff won the firs t mo ta with his Puch , Bruce was seco nd on h is Penton. Bruce reall y b lew h is sta rt in th e first ro und , and h adto co me fr om las t place t o get second, an d that after just ni pping Chuck Bo w er in th e last lap almost at the flag. The second mo ta was a real Pier 6 brawl between Wright and Baron. At the flag drop, they got off together with Jeff taking the lead for nine-tenths o f the first lap. Baron p ulled up alongside Wright just as the y made the 180 at the bottom of the hill. Entering the fro nt straight, Baron got too close, hit J eff, and the two b ikes Rot hooked together. Baron thought his peg got caught in J eff's scooter. Before thay co u ld get free o f eac h o th er, they were in last pl ace. John Volkman Wabbed the lead, and said later he was so nervous that he made every mistake in the book, but he held the lead to the checker. Meanwhile, Baron and Wright were slicing through the field to finish with Baron second and Wrigh t th ird . As spectators, th ey weren't too happy, both itching to take off their body riggi ng an d get back in action. The las t round fo r th e 125 Experts was set -up t o b e a real go , Wrigh t with a firs t a nd a third for 625 points, Baron w it h two seconds and 600 p oints. Whoever finis h ed in fron t of the other w o uld w in o verall. Bu t, as somet imes happ ens, the rac e n ever d eveloped. Bar on go t a nothe r b ad start , wh ile J eff was fast d isappearing in the lead. Bruce played catc h -u p for five laps. Though h e d id get up irit o second spot, and eve n got close to Wright, he didn 't h ave the combination to get by. The final order was Wright, Baron and Volkman; Pu ch, Pe nton, Bultaco .
