CONCLUSION : HOT TIPS US PROS SWEAR BY
By Richard H. Creed
Get to the track early, avoid crowds, do as many
rider s do and walk the track. Observe every part of it .
Look for rippl es; t hey will get much worse during
the course of the day, and much trickier. Loo k for
differ ent lines through turn s. If it 's a tight turn yo u
can bet there will b e lots o f action as each rider tries
to outfox the other. Look for rock surfaces that will
t urn into a skating rink before the day if over.
Needless to say, mud is always a good ph oto
situation, especially if t here is stan ding water.
While we are on the subject of wat er, b e sure to
keep tabs o n th e weather forecast on race day and
tw o or three days before. I have been in t he situation
of having to dec ide betw een two races a hundred
miles apart . All th ings b eing eq ual I ta ke the one t hat
had had th e best weath er th e last co uple of days. I
hate t o go to some place ju st to b e rained out, or have
recent rain affect rider tu rn out .
I also hate sand and dust , a major problem in
Texas, b ecause it not onl y caus e loss of detail and
qualit y in my photographs but it slowly but surely
destroys my equipment. Sand and du st gets into
every part of your Camera and even into the film
cassettes themselves. It also gets into your eyes and
irritates them, grinds away in yo ur te eth and makes
you drink more beer which make s you gain weight
wh ich mak es yo u tired which slows your reflexes
which means yo u will prob abl y miss th at great shot in
th e th ird mo to as DeSot o pips Joel and Sylvain for
the win in th e last tum . Sand is a bum trip .
T o make mat t ers worse, sand is usually in the
com pany of the wind ; great ho wling gales right across
the track and into your lens . And th e only t hing I
hate worse than wind and sand is rain . Rai n! God
Almighty , do I hate rain! I used to live in Washingt on,
D.C., and it seemed like it was always raini ng. I grew
a might y hatred for the st uff. That 's wh y I came back
to Texas.
If y ou mu st take photo s in the rain or an
eye-glazing sand st o rm, take heart . Help is jus t a
