Some bodies were left sit ti ng on the
line at the start of the 6 50 Expert run .
It took so me two or th ree laps to decide
w hether to restart the race or not and
when the flag was flown it was done in
an inappropriate way so that t he first
fou r guys kept on the gas . Finally,
everyone stopped and a restart was

were in favor of it. Wit h the outcome
changing after th e fall of th e second
flag, the words got a little heavy.
The restart lo st one of its racers

Smith had been leading most of the race
except that at the finish. It was Alex
Jorgensen that actually took the

Weatherman Pulls Through
By Larry Ulrich
BEND, ORE., April 2, 1972 - Today
marked the opening of a new motocross
track in Central Oregon. This track is
one of three CMC (C aliforn ia Motosport
Club) tracks in the state of Oregon.
The weatherman really cooperated
for this event. He came across with rain
on Sa turday, and a hot sunny d ay for
S und ay . I saw quite a few sunburned
bodies ru n ning arou nd by lat e Sunday
afternoon. The rain Saturday and
watering efforts ' a f the track owners
held the dust down. The track has a
buried sp rin k ler sy st em, but co uld not
be used because o f lack of water. Wells
in Central Oregon are ra re, an d rural
peopl e d ep end o n th e irrigatio n canals
to supply water needs. The irr igation
sea so n was one w eek away, so no water.
Next race, A p ril 2 3 win see a
co m p le tely sp rinklered track.
Due to a small t urnout fo r this first
ra ce, so me classes were run together,
b ut scored separately. This resulted in
some: p retty interesting racing. One such
race was the 250 Intermediate and the
Open Junio r. Ventura, Cali fo rnia CZ
rider, Steve Allen had a horsepower
edge over 250 Maico rider Rick
Limbeck and managed to beat Limbeck
to the first corner in all three motos. In
the first and third mota , Li mbeck had
to be content with following Allen
around, as h is 250 just could not stir up
enough beans to pass the 400. The
second mota was a different story
however, as Allen overshot the first
co rn er and Limbeck got the lead and
steadily pulled away from Allen.
Most riders enjoyed the new' track,
which is a spectators delight. T he track
is p lai nly visible from any location and
the eigh t jumps and four holes make for
plenty of action. Overnight camping are
am o ng future plans for Deschutes Cycle
Park, bu t in the me antime camping is
availab le at T umalo State Par k o r
Kampgrounds of A merica near the
t ra ck.
I ro de the tra ck, and found it to be
fun a nd very p hysically d ema nding.
Next tim e, I hope to see m ore riders
show up, as m o re ri de rs m ean mo re fun .
O ut o f 10 first place trophies
awarded , six went to Red mond Oregon
riders. T hese Redmo nd riders are p retty
proud of themselves, and asked me to
issue a challenge to Willamette Valley
riders to come over and try to beat
them. Also any vacationing California
riders are invited to give these boys a
try.
