, .. Burgess Beats Bigger Bikes on CMA's New Track .... M .& Q. .... '" '" By Larry K no p Photos by Gary Payne SA LT LAKE CITY, UTAH, March 19, 1972 Rider reaction to the Continental Motocross Association's new track ranged from enthusiastic to ecstatic. CMC combined their four yea rs of motocross experience with .a lo t of hard work and a little luck to produce the new co urse. Utah motocross co urses have tended to be short, ti gh t, and narrow. T h e only co m p laint riders h ad abou t the new CMC track was th at maybe the straight was a little too lo ng . The racing . was as fantastic as th e track. The scene was set when not enough 200 Expert class riders sh owed up , and the class was combined with the 250 Experts. Now y ou can 't give awa y 50 to 75 cc on a fast, wide track, right? Wrong! Bob Brown led the class first moto, b ut n o one was watching him because of th e b attle fo r second. Steve Burgess on a 1 75 was having it o ut with Woody Lawhon and Jon Henry, both o n 25 0 's. Steve wo uld lose a pl ace o ne lap and get it back th e next. The last lap Steve was behind. At the end of the straight, in the last corner of the m o to , h e m ade h is move . He b raked lat er, slammed into th e corner five m p h faster than anyone else all day, and mad e it, b eat ing Woody across the finish line b y inch es. The second moto Brown's throttle a o 250 Expe rt wi nne r Steve Burgess gets ready to pounce on Woody Lawho n. cable stuck, and he went down with his arm caught between the fender and the spinning wheel. That was quite an ouch. (It definitely wasn 't Brown's day - on the way to the hospital to get his arm checked, the ambulance was rear-ended.] Meanwhile Jon Henry really got it on, and aft er much dicing back and forth it was Jon first , Steve second, and Wood third. It was still anyone's race, but Steve outdid himself third moto, winning the moto and the 250 Expert class on his 175 . Jon Henry had t o settle for seco nd and Woody Lawhon fo r third. . With that type of drama it would seem that the other races would be Ent husiasm ru ns rampant amongst"7he younger ones . -- I DISPLAY ADVERTISING DEADLINE KAWASAK I ONLY O ne of O ra ng e Cou nt y ' s La rgest Stoc k of t I I WEDNESDA Y, Spm APR. 19 Expert service on all ma kes o f moto rcycles 10 % RAC ERS DISCOUNT 2255 HARBOR BLVD., COSTA MES A, CA . There may well be more next time when word gets around. CMC is promising less dust and an eve n better track for their April 22 -23 Motocro ss and Swap Meet, and it should be a good one..
