CODY . They run three-lap heat races and sometimes four-lap handicap heats. But they don't get to run too many handicap heats because of all the team racing. CN. Did you have any racing goo d ies that th e A ussies wanted ? BAST. Every thi ng w e had they wanted. We ha d quick change gearing o n the rear hub, yo u know, knockoff hubs by Barnes. Boy, they couldn't b elieve those and th ey offer ed good money for them. CODY . They wanted our Bell bags and o ur T-shirts . BAST. Yeah, th ey were digging on our T -shirts with the writing and stuff on them. They reall y went for th e Flanders T ·shirts with the picture of the racer on the back (A plu g f or Bru ce, by Bruce... Ed. ) CN . Was it on e promoter o r an asso ciat ion of promoters that bro ught you down th ere? BAST. One promoter named Frank Olivere co nt ra cted for us to rid e and then he subb ed us out to the other LINE OF WINNERS. FROM THE ORIGINATORS OF PRODUCTION STREAMlINING CN. Do they run their speed way meet ings d iffer en tly than we do h er e? CODY . Well, along with 18 heats o f sp eed way th ey run side hacks, midgets an d a stock car program all in o n e night. They start at 7 :3 0 and get ov er around midnight. BAST. Th ere is n o foo ling around during the sh ow. Your o wn rac es ar e ab o u t three minutes apart and you better be read y. One time they really go t on my case b ecau se I sto pp ed ou t on to the track and didn 't h ave my helmet on yet. Bo y, did they get bent ! CODY . You sh ould see the drag. They get the whole. track drug in what seems like 30 seconds. No kidding. They mu st run 80 with the drag all the way aro u nd . CN . Did you get to ride any of t he handicap races? BAST. One ti me, Sonny (Nu tt er) and I cam e from th e 80- yard line while Bill was b ack a t th e 90. Landels was b ack on the 130-yard line . Sonn y wo n that one an d Landels was seco nd . CN . Ho w far apart wer e the races? COD Y. T wo weeks apart at Liverpool wi t h o ther traveling in b etw een. We sp ent o ne who le week in Adelaide and a few days in Melbourne. The p romo te rs had a thi ng about letting u s p ractice o n th e track an d would p ro mise us a whole d ay on t he track wh ile th ey ac tu ally o nly let us p ractice abo ut a hal f ho ur . In Sydney on th e t hird-mile track th ey only let us have a half ho ur during th e week an d it was rain ing the whole time. I only got in tw o laps , which d idn't help much. • CN . What d o the promo ters think now? CODY . T h ey want us b ack next y ear . CN. Who was the mo st impressiv e rider you saw down the re? BAST. It h ad to be Bill Land els. He rid es with bars like Ko nle and never gets into a slide but he goes like hell. CN . So, let's see, th ev had 18,000 people and they were charging a buck fifty to get in. How much did you get paid for riding? CODY . Six dollars a p oin t and six dollars a show against $100 guarantee. That was for each of us. And yo u had to really d o so me rid ing to mak e any more mo ney and the maxim um you could make was maybe $140 o r $1 50 in the wh ole night. CN. Which track did yo u like th e best? CODY. I p erso nally lik ed Liverp oo l track th e b est be cau se I d id my b est the re. BAST. I liked Western Springs in New Zealand. I di d n't do very go od there but I still liked it b est , if I have to pick on. I didn't lik e th e big ro u nd-sha pe d tracks b ecause my bike was givin g m e troubles on th e big hand-it -all-on-type racing and it wouldn't hold togeth er. I was running the co nc en tric carb ur eto r t hat w e have found to be the b est o n th e small tr acks and it wo uld run out o f fu el wh en it wo u ld get on th e gre at big trac ks.
