Mo st rid ers sh ut o ff. downshift . a nd crack the throttle to smack off the berm with a big roostertail. Not Tom. He hi t it full bore and never shut off; j ust went around it like it was the Wall o f D eath. Beautiful. Bruce Baron was hot on a Penton and was clo sing on R app in the las t moto when his sh ocks gave o ut, a common malady o n a course lo aded wit h whoopdees. The res t of the p ack b ehind him was scram b led so he still wo n second o verall. Dan Turner. who sw o oped 'e m last week on his MCB . o r Monark , o r so me th ing. b attled long an d lo nesome for third place .m o ney . Tall T erry looks a bit odd on that short 125 Italian Harley but h e knows how to keep a bike trained. The course was for the mo st p art t he same as used a last week 's Hangtown, except that it was run backwards. T he mudhole p roved to be the d ifference between a w in ' a nd DNF at the Sportsman's race yesterday. T he co mmon sightwas a b rand new Sl500 machine being degpaddled through th e goo when liberal application of th e t hrottle and a y an k on th e bars would have done wonders. Eve l, of course. was on hand with three jumps Saturday and another over the rattlesnakes today. Unfortunately, organized animal pals p ress ured Eve! into leaving the mountain lions out of it after the famed showman joked on the telly that he was going t o shoot them after he jumped them. Bad timing. Evel's b roken collarbone was hurting h im and he was edgy all weekend. Of co urse, the large crowd loved the show despite several d run ken hecklers. You have to accept that because Olympia Bee r p ut up t he $ 6.000 p rize m oney . K udos to Cal -Cro ss. w h o p ut on the sh ow. It was o ne of the few m oto crosses in A merica where y ou could cross the trac k w hen nobody was co ming and still expect d ecent medical attent ion if yo u got h it . . & 0- ....
