Weather Waxes RAT Racers xeept Ramon & Weatherwax By Al Fols ADELANTO, CAL., April 2, 1972 After a rather windy Saturday night, Sund ay was nice and warm for the Racing Action Team Hare Scramb les. Many no vice riders fro m Sat u rd ay 's Distri ct 37 European Scrambles held at Hi Vista braved th o se cold winds and ventured over to the R.A .T . race. In attendance was Wallis (Guy) Weatherwax, leaving his wife, Diane home with a new born baby girl. Wallis, the most publicized novice in the ' United States, finis hed second overall. (For the rider's convenience, R.A.T. officials had made so me handsome signs leading the racers into the pits. So handsome, passing motorists removed some of the signs from Highway 395 at the pit entrance. The rider's meeting was held at 9 :30 a.m, sharp, and the start was pro mptly at 10 a.m, Just as advertised. ..,. r- :!l, '" ,... c, N '" Novice and beginners swarmed away from the start all at the same time. First into the pits and first overall winner was Ramon Lowe, 250 Novice. Ramon struck another victory for those over 40. Paul McDowell, age 7, was the youngest entrant and finisher on his 60cc Yamaha Mini-Enduro. At about "94th overall was Robert Berryhill, age 50, the oldest finisher. By executive decision, the Racing Action Team promoted all beginners in the top 100 overall finishing positions to novice riders. The officials have also decided that any novice finishing first in his class twice at a R.A.T. race will have to race District 37 events from that point on. Any beginner finishing in the top 10 percen t of his class on more than one occasion will be classed as a Novice rider. (Results o n page 56) Q. « ~ w Z W ..J o >o ...
