Being Good Frida y , th e end of th e Easter week, I was lo oking for a small sho w , but the ' Looney Lions Fast Cats sh ow is j ust too good to p ass up. I was talki ng t o a gentleman duri ng the short intermissio n. and since this was his first t ime to wat ch moto c ro ss, he wanted to k now h ow mu ch mo ney those yo u ngs te rs were racing for. When told t h at th e Juniors an d Intermed iat es we re racing for trophies only, h e wal ked aw ay mutte rin g so m e th ing like, "What th e h ell would they d o if they w ere riding for money". If th ere was another moto cro ss event being run in Southern" California tonight, it had to be a pretty sh ort show. .Just about every top-rated Expert aro und these parts checked in at Lions; Hart, T h orw a ld so n , Rapp, Cram, Bowe r, Zahrt , Hershey , R odger s, Pessy, etc . T im Hart is getting the feel of h is new sunburst-finned Maico, b ut he hasn't got it wired . He t raded wi ns with Bo b Hershey's CZ in th e first two rounds and th en came o n in th e final moto to notch first overall in th e 500 's . Hershey came in fo r second and Mike Cram , back in action h ere , go t a h ard -fo ugh t th ird o n h is new Maico. T he 25 0 Expert cla ss was won by Baty Bob Hershey with l1art sec ond , and Tom Rapp, b ack in business on a new Bultaco, getting the third spot. There wa s a bunch o f hard ac t io n in the last tw o rounds. In th e sec ond moto l1art was push ing lead er H ershey h ard, I was standi ng at the edge of th e trac k on th e inside of tu rn one, pannin g with Hersh ey as I}e en te re d the t u rn . Hart was about five feet b eh in d Bob . .Just as I triggere d t he shot o f Her sh ey, Hart d ro pp ed it , and headed straight at me. I reall y tho ug h t I had d one b ought th e farm, bu t m y feet re sp onded to the fra n tic pleas of m y p ani c-stricken mind and I m an aged t o avoi d th e slid ing Hart and what lo o ked t o b e a 250 l\laic o th e siz e o f a Greyh ound bus. In th e third round, Hart and Dave Rodgers tangled in turn one, both riders and both bikes d oing a lot o f tumb lin g. Hart was up at once, but Rodgers wasn't moving and it didn't look good. Dave's Bu ltaco had come to rest with th e wheels pointing st ra ight up , perc h ed o n the seat and h andleb ars, the wheels st ill t u rning. The am bulance atte nda nts go t Dave 's h at off and started talking to him, b u t it took a few moments before Dave res ponded. He wasn't serio usly injured, b u t he didn' t know who o r where h e was for sometime. Hart restarted with the rest of the fiel d , b u t Da ve cal led it a ni gh t.
