'" '" !l> PETE MALY: 500 JR, 380 '" CL '" Cl " cz. 180 IQ By David CARLSBAD, CAL., April 2, 1972 - An l S-year-o ld named Peter Maly trounced a field of 500 Novices here at Carlsbad Raceway today with the most impressive display o f natural talent (fo r lack of a better term) than one co ul d ever hope to see. As a brand new Junior, Maly has WOn his last four outings with the ACA. Maly's story is a typical one at first. He learned to ride on small Japanese bikes, in this case father George's Suzuki 80. Peter wanted to race but that was where George drew the line. You see, Peter has an I.Q. of 186 and a sister who, at 2 1, earned a Masters a nd a Bachelor's degree in two sciences. Naturally, the elder Maly, a well-bre d immigrant fro m Czechoslovakia prior to Russia's occupation, wanted to see t he sam e for so n Peter. But Peter was adamant, with o r without fat herly blessings, got a j ob to save up for a CZ, a nd hasn't been beaten in the last m o n th . • It's not enough to simply say Peter won. He spends more tim e unicycling than a ny other rider I've seen, n o t because he is grandstanding but because the power is always on. Clad in Levis, a sweat shirt, and Vibrarn-soled work boots with the bottoms worn smooth, he exits c orners like he was slung from a string and accelerates off of j umps as if shot fro m a rubber band. You can see him learning new things each lap, and no 'd o ub t his last lap was h is fastest. In the pits, Pet er is a typical modest kid, rerninescent of Bill Clements. He doesn't play the role of genius. per se, He says he eventually wants to open up a shop. G eo rge has learned to accept his son's wishes and has even become an enthusiastic supporter. But he still won't give him a cent for racing. Next Sunday, Maly (pronounced "molly") will sign up as an Intermediate, which is the ACA's way ' o f bumping u p people, an d should race amo ng the Sen iors. It will be interesting to watch the o utco me. Overshadowed b y Ma ly were the next two 500 J unio rs, Bo b D unsir e andJack Habel. Dunsir e rallied in the final m oto a « ~ w Z w oJ o >o Pete Malyi Swift to narrowly ace out Habel for second overall. Next week at Saddleback will the culmination of the ACA Bultaco series a single point separates Habel and Dunsire, who leads everyone else. Ironically , both a re members o f the Off-Cambers M.C. Another sterling performance was turned in by Leonard Mellgren, who stood on the 250 Intermediate/Expert class. No one came close to him all day. The rest of the pack was kind of a mess. Randy Rodrigu ez went on his head once or tw ice and still managed second Senior. Dirk Wambold went off the course trying to avoid Rodriguez, who was laying on the track at that m omen t , but still got first 250 Intermediate. Wambold, Ro drigu ez , Larry McCarty, Ch uck Lunde, and others spent the bulk of the day circulating in d uc kling fashion. Bo b Fish, last week's 500 Senior winner, was taken o ut in a b iza rre second- moto accident. lI e wo n th e fir st but dropped it while t ucking u nder Carl Cott on in the second. Whil e tr y in g to make u p time he missed a comer an d failed t o cover up his tracks. In order t o avo id a DNF, a friend waved hi m back while Dan held u p the banner. Fish sped unde r, caught his helmet visor on it, an d was pulled off the bike. Luckily, he was only shaken. He cal led it a day. Gary Co chell p ic ked up the p ieces and p u t together the last two motos for t he Se nior win. Co ch el was entered on a Maico but was rid ing an Ajay. Mike Felton rode his first race as a Senior today and smoked the 125 class. R o n Sc hwab was 125 J unior w it h tw o seconds and a first, Vince Balch put in some winning performances except fo r a DNF in the first round. Another sweep. R ichard Kastn er , like Maly and Mellgren, smoked all of his co mpetition: The 250 Junion in this case. Wanda the ACA lady wo uld like to m ention a boo-boo a nd re sultant apology. She said Rex S taten won t he 250 Senior class las t week b ut she got h im confused with ano ther rider wh o used th e same n u mber as R ex.
