Co U By Buzz Baty WILMINGTON,CAL. March 24, Bewitched? Bothered? Bewildered? No!, But I'm gratified to be part of, and witness to, the fantastic success story that is happening each week as Lions Drag Strip presents its Friday night CMC Motocross races. If one race is routine, the: next is one of those grab-the·person-next-to·you things, and the third is apt to be a real barn burner. Tonight was just as outlined. The first mo tos in all the classes we re just good motos. John DeSoto won his first in the 500 class aboard his Suzuki, Chuck Bower won the first 125 Expert mo to with his Pen to n , and Bob Hershey zapped the 250 Experts with his CZ. DeSoto wo n h is second mo to as Tim Hart was beginning to ge t the feel of h is new Maico, making Joh n wo rk harder fo r the win . Easterner Jim Weinert ma de his presen ce felt , riding Lions for the first time. It took only t wo moto s before h e was gett ing calls as a fron t ru nner. Ken Zahrt jump ed into an instan t lead in the second 125 Expert ro und with Bower riding h is silencer, Ch uck stayed there fo r two lap s, bu t then los t h is chain. Zah rt went o n for the win. Dave Rodgers was havi ng one of those nights that mu st seem like a nightmare. It seemed that everyth ing he tried turned sour. In the final 125 moto Dave thought he was back in the. groove. Bower grabbed the lead with Joe Scotland second, Rodgers third, and Zahrt in fourth . On the second lap, Chuck dropped it, letting Scotland,Rodgers, and Zahrt run 1·2 -3 . But just before the finsih line on lap four of the five-Iapper, Rodgers.in trying to pass Joe, locked handlebars with him and they both went down. Zahrt , who was righ t on top of the falling pair, showed real ability and quick reflexes as he managed to avoid the pile-up an d held first place to the flag and got first OA. Chuck Morgenston got to the pay window for the second spot, as J o e Sco t land saved third. For the very first tim e, I saw DeSoto get buried back in the third-moto pack o n the start. Weinert, H ersh ey and Hart jum p ed o ut in front as DeS o to started passing riders. Beach , Calif (714) 867·2202 ""WSA pressure of having Bob,Tim and John breathing down his neck was just too much. In less than a distance of 50 feet on the third lap, Hershey, then Hart, then DeSoto all passed him. It looked like Hershey had everything needed to win, but zounds, down he went under hard pressure from Hart. Tim held the lead to the checker for the win over a fast closing DeSoto. As usual the "Looney Lions Fast Cats " started with a mild purr, but ended with their usual growl!
