TRICKY TRIALS AT SADDLEBACK By DeeDee Earl IRVINE, CAL ., March 19 , 1972 Saddleback Park was th e sit e chosen b y t he Plo nkers Trials Club for their March 19 points trial event, the second suc h event ho st ed b y them this year . A good ma ny riders apparently agreed with their choice as shown by the entry of 15 1 competitors. Saddleback has been used numero u s t im es in the p ast but co m petit io n ' chairma n Le roy Earl and cre w fo und new and challenging te rrain in which t o set up sections for the various classes. A th ree m ile lo o p was ridden twice in the mo rnin g with the Masters having 16 sec t ions and the Experts competing in 14 of these. Master Mark Eggar, recently b ack from competitio n in France and Spain, took top ho nors of t he Clay by dropp ing o nly 46 points to the second pl ace ride by R ich Bledsoe with 59 poin ts lost . Ric h we nt over w ith Mark o n their E uro pean trek. Third place Mast er rider Bob Nickelse n is o ne of tw o rider s sent to Sp ain in 19 7 1. Seems lik e they must b e p ick ing u p so me awfully good st uff fro m th e overseas pros. Eggar felt today 's eve nt was a " trick y t rials" and enjoyed in particular the lo ng section created by successive _ traps No. 11, 12, and 13. He felt the sections in Europe w ere more nit-picky than here due to th e great skill of th e riders over there. They not only used extremely d ifficult ro ck sections, but proceeded to incorporate very tight turns into th ose ro ck s. Derek Edgar, a long kn own top trials riders from Scotland, co mp et ed in the morning's competition and placed 11 th in th e Master class. Edgar contributed part of his low standing to the fact th at he has been off his machine for six mo n th s and was suffering fro m the "A me rican flu". But De rek was also quick to say that h e h as seen a tremendous im pro vem ent in American tr ials rid ers since-he was last over here in late 19 6 9 . The Kid s & Wo men classes rode four loops of six sections with Debbie Evans taking firs t place in the Kids class by lo sin g only nine points. Debbie was riding a st o ck I 75 Yamaha and was overh ear d to have said "I can ' t wa it until I get a go od tri als bike" - her ability today, however, didn't seem to be hampered. Perhaps second place Steve Stewart and third place Kelly Miriani would just as soon see Debbie keep t his machine. The afternoon saw the Amateurs and new ly starte d Novice class off o n a two lo op ride of 13 sections, ten of these mo dified slightlv for t he Novices. "Kamikaze Ha rry" L umsden reall y had his day by taking first A mateur with a point loss of only 15 . (Results on p age 32) CL EAN REST ROOMS J .C. A gajanian purchased Ascot Par k recently and had a b ig press and camera part y to sh o w off his S100000 improvem ent pro gram. While we ';"ere wined and di ned and h ad the chance to rub elbows with so me of the super-shoes wh o had their machinery o n d isp lay we lo o ked o ver th e newer and ne at er Ascot Park. " A ggie " is making extensive mo cli ~cat i.o ns to the track. Mo re lights are bemg installed and the track is being re-surfaced and re -banked with 25.000 tons of genuine d irt. The motocross co u rse is being brought up to CMA specs. The pits are b ein g made more co mfortable with n ew concessio n facili t ies and rest rooms . Whi le we are on th e subject, the new spec tator rest rooms are great. You hav e never seen anything like t hem. Why yo u co u ld j ust p ay your money and spend the evening in t he joh n. . Spectators are b ein g acco mm od at ed in other ways too: bi gger , p aved parking; relocated PA system, improved seating, better and m o re vari ed food at the concession stands an d so o n .
