Making victory even sweeter for Yamaha were Ray Hempstead, David Smit h, and Fred Gut t ner who finished 2nd, 3rd, and 5t h respectively all astride Yamaha 350's. In the pro cess of winnin g the " Daytona 200," Emde set two major precedents : his Yamaha was the first 2 ~tro ke ever to t ake the money in the 200 Classic; and at 350cc t he TR3 is the smallest bike ever to win in th is race, where com pet ito rs 'pack up to 750cc. Emde 's average speed, including pit stops , was a blistering 103.358 mph on t he twisting 3.8 mile course. A combination of outstanding perfo rmance and Yamaha reliability under fire, were the over-rid ing factors that put Yamaha mach ines in the money in every major Daytona event. DAYTONA LIGHTWEIGHT RACE 100 miles, 250cc and smaller a 1st Place, Dave Sm ith on Yamaha TD2. New record set : 101 .497 mph average. 2nd Place, Kenny Roberts on a Yamaha TD3. 3rd Place, Bobby Winters on a Yamaha TD2.
