DAYTONA BEACH
DAYTONA BEACH, FLA., FEB. 12; Highlighting a week of racing in
which Yamaha broke three records and dominated every event, Don
Emde of San Diego t hundered to victory in the Daytona 200 Mile
Naticnal aboard th e new Yamaha 350 TR3.
Making victory even sweeter for Yamaha were Ray Hempstead, David
Smit h, and Fred Gut t ner who finished 2nd, 3rd, and 5t h respectively all astride Yamaha 350's.
In the pro cess of winnin g the " Daytona 200," Emde set two major
precedents : his Yamaha was the first 2 ~tro ke ever to t ake the money
in the 200 Classic; and at 350cc t he TR3 is the smallest bike ever to
win in th is race, where com pet ito rs 'pack up to 750cc. Emde 's average
speed, including pit stops , was a blistering 103.358 mph on t he twisting
3.8 mile course.
A combination of outstanding perfo rmance and Yamaha reliability under
fire, were the over-rid ing factors that put Yamaha mach ines in the money
in every major Daytona event.
