POPE Buena Park, Calif. YEA, ALHAMBRA! The city of Alhambra has opened a cycle park for minis and motorcycles up to I25cc. After a lot of effort the park is now operating weekends and holidays, nine to five . The course is very tigh t with lots of jumps. We have had little publicity but are doing well co nsid ering t hat the city has no budget for the park. All o pe rating expenses must co me from wh at the park makes. MARKCOSTEL Alhambra, Calif. M.CROSS CHASING LITTLE RIBBONS Last weekend I had the thrill and excitement of chasing down little ribbons at , the "J ester" family poker run. My husband with his 400 in first gear and our five-year-old on his tank followed my 175 with our three-year-old on the tank. We must have lo oked a sight, but we had the time o f our lives. Now I know the fun and freedom of following a marked course just like desert racers. Cop yrigh t €) Cycle News. We'll be at the "Smugglers" race looking for another great time. , JUDY ADAMS Southern California Brush Crushers machines. I live three miles from the Long Beach Marina, and I can hear the boat drags. RANDY S. GOMEZ Long Beach, Calif. MOTH ERS' MARCH . T HERE'L L ALWAYS BE A N ENGLAND ! I have stopped going to the desert races with my husband because we have two small children, and I'm so afraid that they will be hit by a pit racer, We even had pit racers at the Viewfinders Grand Prix, and the letter we received said it was a no -no . I feel that the District 37 committee could help with ' the problem, but it is up to everyone who enjoys the sport, Norton take umbrage. In your Daytona report you say our "pit facilities were primitive... filling Phil Read's Norton using a cut-out cocoa tin." The fuel container you refer to so deprecatingly was made, at 24 hours notice, by Moon Equipment Co . - it is a scaled down version of the successful NASCAR type. KOOKIE FAN CLUB For ye ars I have followed the adven t ur es o f "Kookie the Super D og " . A ft er this many ye ars, I can trul y say that La ssie is no longer my idol. It was hard fo r me , a mutt, to break awa y fr om the A.K.C. approved idol. It all started when my master cam home one weekend a fter going for a ride on his Iron Horse, stating that he saw a human riding around with a dog on his gas tank. I, of course, laughed. A few weeks later we all were taken to a noisy dirt field where my master and others were trying to climb a hill. Some humans got to the top, then they came down. This was the first time I saw Kookie. He was sitting on 'th e tank telling his master where the rocks were on the hill. They went up and down several times. If a rider did not make it, Kookie would check to see if he had water-proofed his tires. When I got home, I raced around to all my friends in the neighborhood telling them about Kookie. The , Frenchie next door, who can only sit up was astonished. Kookie's fame traveled from Dominquez Hills to Las Vegas. If there was a race, he was there. My master has pinned up pictures of him in my dog house for me. Dogs in my area came over every week to hear about what Kookie has done that week. Keep up the great image, Kookie, for you are the J.N. of us dogs . It has been proven that you too have a deep voice! P.D. LEBO Kookie Fan Club Carson, Calif. VO ICES OF THE WEST We have to start somewhere or else there just might be a Mothers' March in the desert because I'm not the only worried mother. LANNY LEHIGH Saugus, Calif. SPORTSHIPMENT I would like to thank Wes Anderson Sr . and his friends for taking down the tent for the two young riders who were out helping my husband and son bring in No. 245 Novice who was down way out on the track. Helping each other will keep our sport together though all else may fail. "Good brotherly concern and sportshipment." "MARTIE" Sand Sailors BEST THIN G WE'VE HEARD ABOUT SINCE THE PIGS ATE GRA NDPA We are offering, free of charge, photos from th e movie "Chrome and Hot Le ather" - lots about motorcycle "gangs". Please use reply postage. Best wishes. AREJAS VITKAUSKAS World·Wide News Bureau Jersey City, N.J. LESS SOUND, MORE INDIAN DUN ES Anyone who saw the news on . Channel 2, Sunday, March 12 will no doubt be quite upset. It is unfo rtunate that CBS chose Indian Dunes to report on. It seems that Indian Dunes is the only place in Southern California that you can ride without a silencer. By not requiring silencers, Indian Dunes has struck another death blow to our diminishing riding areas . How about it, Indian Dunes, less sound more ground? DA VID & TERRY MICKELSON Garden Grove, Calif. I accept that we lost third place because of a 26.,;econd pit stop, but this delay was due to an internal air lock in the petrol tank of the machine, NOT due to our primitive equipment - after all, this tank (and bike) were seeing the light of day for the firs t time and everything was too jolly new! Upon reflection though, our "antiquated Norton twins" had a happy week and it is our sincere wish that Yamaha are able to start racing th eir 750cc multis just as soon as there are 200 in the countJ:y... MIKE JACKSON General Manager Norton Villiers Corp . EAR 'OLE RS T AK E NOT E I thought you might like to print a little information about a club that has been recently organized. It is called the Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association, and is an AMA chartered club . This group will be sponsoring AMA amateur road races at West Delta Park in Portland, Oregon. The dates are April 30, May 28 , August 6, September 17 and October 8. Production, Grand Prix and Sidecar classes will be run, as well as beginners' class. Anyone wishing information about the club or its races can write Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association, P.O . Box 13454, Portland, Oregon, 97213, or call (503) 2824215 . G. DEAN NEWTON Treasurer IN IT FOR TH E MONEY Elaine Smith of Bakersfield has a point when she says that the Elsinore Chamber of Commerce is in the GP business for profit and gain. We do greatly appreciate the respect you've shown for the Gripsters M.C., yet we encourage riders and spectators to support this event. Thanks, Elaine. STEVE YOUNG Secretary, Gripsters M.C. SIL ENCE BOATS THAT DID WHAT? I am 13-years-old, and I would like to know why we (motorcyclists) have to have silencers on our b ikes when racing mo tocross, desert , scrambles. The drags and boat drags make more noise than we do, and they don't silence their All right, Papa Wealey, that did it! You're still rubbing salt into the wound. Like I told you every time y o u beat me it wasn't superior riding skill. It was that tuner you had, Rod Breaker that gave you that extra edge. I've decided to come to the states and set up residence in Lawndale, Calif. I'll be riding out of Precision Cycle 'cause I've contracted that famous tuner D.C. Bird to tune my scooter. I surely hope I get a better reception than W. Schutz got. OLE POOP Wsqunav, Sweden DEAR CLETE : Enclosed is a copy of a letter we sent to KNXT Channel 2 News regarding the very biased report they gave on Indian Dunes. We were there when they filmed the sports short. They gave the ' impression they were interested in the sport; but when it was broadcast, it was presented in an entirely different light. We think the letter speaks for itself. MR . & MRS. JOHN MAL FITANO Tujunga, Calif. Mr. Clet e Roberts KNXT Channel 2 6121 West Sunset Los A ngeles, California Dear Mr. Roberts: We want to tha nk y ou f or an other shining exam ple of your " un biased " n ews reporting. We are referring to y our short and not-so-suieet coverage of Indian Dunes. It em I: You made a defint e point of bringing the noise fa ctor to the attention of t he public. . Is...it ., mrre coincidence that you picked one of the few places not requiring silencers? Is it more mere coincidence that you make no mention of the fact that motorcyclists are encouraging and, in many cas es, demanding that mo torcycles have silencers? And is it still more mere coincidence that you pictured a family trying to have a quiet meal without ever mentioning the fact that this is not a park devoted to picnicking, but rath er to off-the-road vehicles which your picnickers had probably just parked in order to eat their lunch? It em II: In regards to your scars on the landscape - would you care to go a short distance down th e road and see th e scars created by the cement of a camping park? Would you care to go up into our own hills and see the scars cr eated by home dev elopment companies? Would you care to look nationwide and see th e scars left by miles and miles of concrete freeways causeways, tollways, etc? What about th e scars left o n people suffering from emphysema, etc . by our ever-present smog? But then, there is always th e case of money. And A.M.A. obviously did not have the backing to counter your one-suiea story. One wonders, if you wer e a dirt , rider, if this story would not have shown other things. Such as: In getting out to the desert by riding dune-buggies (wh ich you failed to show), motorcycles, dunies and dune-cycles, th e whole family can go along and be a part. The kids can run and yell without fear of disturbing the neighbors. Mom can ride or relax without a TV blasting. A nd Dad can work out the kinks that build up during the week as a result of working in this rat-race of a wonderland we laughingly call "Sunny" California. You also neglected to mention th e giant clean-up done voluntarily by mo torcyclists at High Vista. According to Federal law, each candidate is entitled to eq ual time. Before you vote bikes, etc: out, how about the other side of the coin ? One last tho ught: If this area was doing so red-hot as a green grassy valley with cattle gazing, why did they choose to change? Very truly yours, Mr. & Mrs. John Malfitano cc: Pat O.Reilly Bill Eames Cycle News
