A good track and warming weather only attracted a small amo unt of sp ecta to rs w hic h is a shame because th e racers provided a good show. He was fo llow ed in qu ick succ essio n by the 4 00 Husky of A lan Knebel an d Glen Brown o n an other Yamaha; th is one a 2 50. T he pits were located a welco me 400 yards o ff th e paved highwa y. Lately , it seems th at many events are staged in areas where finish er pins should be given just for getting to the pits. SRA d ir e ct or s Joh n T aylor and Ron Vin cellette explained th at t he co urse would circle t he valley, escap e into the next valle y through a canyon and re-enter o ver a low saddle. A quick tour around the 21 miles on Saturday showed th at Sunday 's run sh ould be in t eresting but a b it slower than most previous SRA courses. SRA followed the lead of the O .C.M.C. group and used a banner arrangement of bright orange material to signal the course instead of the smoke bomb in general use . It worked really great. The lead riders never los t sight of it. Those who lacked quick starting scooters or pounds of intestinal fo rt it ude (guts, Virginia), and got in the middle o f the pack, co uld n 't have seen the orange ribbon if it was tied around their ne ck . Not to say that this was any worse th an any mass desert start. They all are dust y , and this was no exception. Because of the mountains around the vall ey and the n atural inclination o f desert -t ype riders to cut off th e co m ers wh er ever p ossible, S RA placed a check at the spot wh ere th e co urse made a har d left and t ook o ff down the length o f the valley. It wa s a gr ea t idea, but the dusty co ndi tio ns aft er the start found many rid ers 'unable to see th e check as they wandered far enough off the main co u rse to get out of some of it. Ch eck crews reported th at all the leaders in both the Novice and Beginner sta rts made it t o th e check . It wasn 't until th e pack ca ught up th at t hey starte d missing it. A q uick hudd le of race officials ca me up with a so lu tio n to thro w it o ut o n t he firs t lo op. When th e rid ers came aro u nd fo r the second loop , t hey we re sp read o ut eno ugh t o keep the same p roblem from occu rri ng, b ut so me had fo und a sh o rt-c ut and decided to hav e an oth er go at it instead of fo llo wing th e well marked course t o th e ch ec k. Sorry ab out th at! As to th e rest o f the co urse ; it was super fast but a bit tricky if yo u didn't watch yourself. About 85 % of the starters took the checkered flag. Fourth overall Jay Settani on a brand new Pursang said something to the effect on the finish line that he really enjoyed it because it was somewhat challenging and y et not a bike breaker. First 100 went to Maywood MIC's Phil Cowan riding a really fast Honda. He beat all the 125's and 175 's to the flag and made the first check on both laps to boot. First 125 fell to C.R. Miller riding a Penton. Miller took 34th overall. The 175 honors went to Tim Bridwell. The beginners went off the line about seven minutes after the Novices and they started to catch up almost immediately. The first one, in 20th position, was 16-year-old Mike Byers aboard a 250 Husky. Larry Murray came in just seconds back on his Yamaha to take th e Open honors. The first girl to cross the line was Ginger 1\ ewton aboard a rip-roaring 70cc Honda with the dubious number plate of MM6 . I believe that has something to do with Mickey Mouse, but I won't tell. The races were ov er and most of the riders on their wa y home before noon. It is sort o f nice to get things o ver early in the day and hav e the rest o f the time to co w trail, drink beer, or engage in whatever your thing is.
