Hardly anything th at would speed up t he pulse rate. Just a quiet, nice evening at Trojan Speedway. That is... until Main Event time rolled around. A couple of J unior riders , Larry Furu (Oss a), and Joe Brown (Bu l) , came up with one of _the most inspired performances in their careers as they treated the fans with one of those heart-in-throat type of a ff airs in the 250 F.T . Main Event. Taking an early lead b y out-jumping Dan Corbett, Dale Hopkins, Bill Adargo, all mounted on Bultacos, Brown led the first lap while Furu, a relatively unknown at this oval, made his wa y through the field in hot pursuit. While Brown continued to amaze the fans b y leading Corbett , Furu moved to third on the second lap. One lap later he took seco nd fro m Corbett b efore disbelieving eyes. From this point on, it was Brown in a m agnificent defense of h is lead, and Furu o u t-do ing himself while probing for an opening. On the final lap , Brown was unable to -h old off Furu 's challenges and ga ve ground under pressure, paving the wa y for Furu's first major victory. Sharing the winner's circle wa s Corbert after his wire-to-wire win in the 250 TT . Trailing third for seven of the eight laps, Ho p kins waited until t he final lap for his best effort when he finally got by to take second fro m Brown who wa s doing an o utstanding job of chasing Corbett. A lthough being out-powered, an d out-manned, the team of Summers and Minnig were not out-classed in th e Buddy Race d esp it e finishing second ..officially ..... to the team of Brown an d Corbett. Using their 100 Kawa saki against the 250 Bultaco of Brown an d Corbett, the real winners with t he fans were Summers and Minnig by virtue of their valiant effort to catch the much older and seasoned riders, and becau se of the fact that Brown and Co rb ett should have been disqualified for havin g made the switch after crossing the finish line.
