(Results on page 36) Spillway Scoring Benefits Consistent By Ken Hyland SANTA MARIA, CAL., March 5, 19 72 - The days of th e sp oradic hotshoe winning one or two races and taking home all th e trophy go ld are over. A new scoring system adopted today at Spillway Park, n ow gives the st eady, co nsisten t rider the honors he deserves. The new system, which has been used fo r some time at Indian Dunes, passes out one point per place per mota, the one w ith the least number of points wins. It doesn't harm the strong, fast racers, but it prevents lucky flukes from happening. Under the old sytem, large numbers of points were handed out for first place and less d own the line. It was quite possible for a rid er to win two ra ces and then barely fin ished the third o ne and take home 't h e top honors. A nd it h appened more than once. Most of the riders welcomed t h e ch ange. It made the most changes in the Junior classes. The top riders in the Senior classes are pretty we ll established and always fast. So there was little change there. • Today was just super hot. The near ninety-degree te mperature hampered both the bikes and the riders. Not only did the mach in es sputter a lo t, b u t ma ny of the usual racers decided t ha t the beach was a cooler place to be. Temperatures are not expected to hamper the participation this week. It will be the first race sp o nsored by the San ta Maria Motocrossers, an offshoot of the Lompoc Slo Pokes. They recently received their charter along with a few sanctions for the park. T he Sio Pokes will be back on April 9 to ho ld their big, double-points, AMXT benefit. All the proceeds from the race and a bike giveaway will go towards the worth y cause . It was a beautiful day and except for the dust, the riders throughly enjo yed the co urse. There were a lot o f dirty teeth behind the big smiles of those who picked up trophies. Riders were entered from as far away as San Fr ancisco , and even with all this co m p et it io n , the Taft riders faired OK . The first class run was th e 0-125ee class. The Novice class winner was Bobby Griswold from San Luis Obispo; th ird place was Patty Williams - a lady fr om Bakersfield. Winners in th e Am ateur cl ass were: First pl a ce , Al Hinric hs fro m San Luis Obispo; second place, Nick Rehorn from Atascad ero. Spillway MX action. Four-Strokers Top Motocross By Bruce C. Young DIXON , CAL., March 12 , 19 72 - The sound of th e big four strokes dominated both the Expert and Amateur Open class of the Polka Dots motocross with two top riders d oing their best to keep the breed alive. In the Expert class it was Alex Jorgenson who ma de his big BSA super scooter stomp all comers. Charlie Marshall (BSA) in the Amateur class did the same thing. T he only close co mpetition to ei ther of these stars was Allan Yarrow (Mai) who was considered by many to b e the ma n to beat. Allan won the first m o ta with Charlie second and Alex third. In the final mota it was Charlie who ga thered first with Alex second and Allan third after a fall on the front sweeper. The track was p ut together expertly by the Polka Do ts and even tho ugh it did get a little dusty late in t he day they can be commended for a real fine race. The race was run as a reverse program wi th big b ikes going first and little ones last. Everyone ran two m o to s and all went home early after having a real great d ay at the races. The w inner of the Op en Novice Div. II was Steve Deckard on a Husky, with James Harlan second overall. Paul Smilanick wa s the top ru nner in the Open Novice Div. I class on a Suzuki. Ronald Hjart ended up second. Now we come to the 250 Amateur/Expert class event t hat was dominated by no n e other than Allan Yarrow on h is favorite Oss a. A llan ran away from all others, but back o n the track there was a real battle waging for second place. Scott Pepper, CZ pilot, collected second by the better showing in the second mota with Guy Marcom of Vicker's Honda on his Yamaha t hird overall. Guy is a much improved rider whom everyone better look o u t fo r in th e fu t ure (even Brad), Guy says. One o f t he best race o f the d ay was the 125 No vice Div. 11 ra ce b etween Jeff Dumm (Pen) and Way ne Morrell (Pen) . Wayn e won the first m ota with J eff fin ishing second. Wh en it ca me to th e second mota Wayne jumped in the lead with J eff in h o t p ursu it. It to ok J eff the entire race to catch Way ne, and h e did by abo ut a half a wh eel on th e fin al ru n to the checkers. J ef f was t he win ner overall w ith Wayn e second. T he 125 A ma te ur/Expert event was also a good one. A battle de velop ed between He nry Ha lback an d Danny Turner. He nry fell in the final mo ta , and Danny too k o ver the lead an d the overall win. He nry got back up in to second at t he end of t he mo t a and took second overall. T his race was ru n expertly and it is only a sample of the way the Po lka Dots M.C . run ra ces. Re me mber th eir biggie, the an nual 4ger Enduro , is coming up April 16th. (Results on page 36)
