M e chanical problcms, hand lin g problems or j us t p lain spring feve r seemed to get in to th e wa y. The track , be cause of th e warm, dry we ather, required co nstan t maintenance. The surface ~o nditio ns ch ang ed fro m rac e to race, but" lap times were only eight tenths o f a second o ff the normally supe rfast Saturday nigh t ac tio n. Hard luck seems to be raining down o n Bob Ho sford . Bob was leading Mike My ers and Scott Smith (h e had just wo n the lead fr o m Myers after a vicio us elbow-to-elbow fight) wh en h is 12 5 decided to shift from th ird to fo urt h . All by its elf it shi fte d. No b ig th ing, b u t wh en it happe ns in the swee per it can ca use so me definite prob lems. Bob went dow n easy. He got off during the second moto, got up de ad last and rode to fourth place, all in two laps . With his win today, it looks like h e is very close to catching Scott Smith in the lightweight points race. During the beginning of th e lightweight practice session, your mild-mannered District 37 Lightweight Scrabmles Steward, Dick Kouns, was observed checking silencers for effective p acking. He wa s not after loud bikes , but bl atent offenders who were try ing to pull the wool over someone's eyes. When last observed, Dick had co mp iled a list of nine numbers to b e disqualified for the day. We saw Kirt Lewis riding with the troops . He say s that he is getting in shape for the Speedway season , b ut most o f the Speedway riders I know are either at th e Saddleback Park practice track or at EI Mirage Dry Lake au t by Adelanto . Further questioning revealed that Kirt wanted some righ t hand turns to break th e monotony . The first 100 Amateu r moto saw Dennis Briggs take a hard high sid e while en tering the b ack straight. He was removed from the infield by ambulance and was later seen limp ing ab o u t with his dad, Wendy Bri ggs. Doug Perrault aced all them 125 Novices during th e Main Event. He was taking turns so low that h e was scraping his elbow. If Doug keeps rid ing like this he will soon b e Amateur. Lightning Does Strike Twice In One Place Department: Hosfo rd seized a rod whil e lea di ng th e 25 0 E xpert first h eat. Mik e Myers and Charles Soderstrom glad ly to ok up the slack, but out o f the bl u e cam e Cary Tanner . Cary managed to rid e past Mike and Charlie t o grab the co vete d trophy. Baddie of the day: 125 Novice rider Dave R eese won his heat with room to spare. He parked his bike next to his t ruck and returned to the sp ectator area to ch ase girls, keeping one eye o n his b ike . Comes t ime for th e Mai n Event an d he goe s after h is cad miu m-p late d Yam ah a. Some malicious d ude ripped off th e carbu retor and air filter. It wasn't the rip -off so mu ch as th e fac t that Dave will really never know whether or no t he would have wo n it. About the carbo Guess it w ill be of little use to whoever has it as it is a sp ecial 32mm Mik un i with a trick fla nge h e l ia rced o n. It is very readil y recogn izable . Also, the foll owing w eek (Ap ril 2) the scrambles will also be held at Adelanto on the smooth track by the Lightweights M.C . Heavyweights will go firs t at the April 2nd race . Bob Sanders jumped on a 350 Kawasaki a nd rode every pony o ut of it th at co uld b e produced . If this is any indication of things to ' co me, th e heavyweigh ts ha d better ta ke no t ic e. Vincent Graves , a name new to r e c en t Heavyweights win ner lis ts, surp rised eve ryo ne and gra bbed th e 500 Exp ert tro phy away fro m Scott Smith. Sc ott, riding hard and well, was ch asing a ver y d etermined rid er who wouldn't settle for second place. Kirk , Redding, su ffering fro m a case of thirdplacei tis , was quoted as sayi ng , "Wait "til we go La Elsinore. Just wa it. ..
