By Buzz Baty WILMINGTON, CAL., March 17, 1972 - A very funny thing happened to Bryar Holcomb here at the beach tonight, on the way to the first overall spot for the 250 Experts, Holcomb lost his gas tank, the who-e-o-ole thing. Holcomb had won the first mota pushing his Ajay hard to hold off a hard riding Maico rider in the person of Bill Payne. The second mota saw the positions reversed, setting the stage for a last mota shoot-out between these two. It started out to be a tooth, claw, and toenail affair; Payne grabbed the lead out of the gate and held it over the jump and for half of the first lap, when Holcomb got by. He held the lead for 200 yards when Payne zapped him back as they hit the jump on the second lap. Holcomb set up to do it to Payne as they went over the jump, and he did, passing Bill in mid-air. Bryar got on the deck first, but hard, even so he started to bomb away when we could see something fly off his scooter. Anno uncer Bruce Flanders called it as a nu mber plate, then as a eng ine cover. Who in their right mind would have though t it was the whole damn gas tank. Whether or not Holcomb would have beaten Payne, he will never know. But one thing he now knows for certain, a 250 AJS will, after losing its gas tank , travel about two and a half feet on the float bowl. Payne got another first overall and Holcomb had enough points for the second spot with Bob Messer and his Ossa filling the show position. Tim Hart, just back from his Florida jaunt where he picked up a second in an A.\1A qualifying race, entered and rode his new Maico tonight, filling the show spot for the 500 Experts.
