CMC MX MX MX MX MX •••• , By Art Fried ma n Photos b y Dave Schoonmaker and Art Friedman CA R L SBA D, CAL.. Ma rc h 12, 19 72-judging from today's racing at Carlsba d raceway, the CMC has organized its events for the participant and not th e spectator. With so me 45 motos and over nine solid h o urs of racing, the program was a test of endurance for spectator and racer alike. The co u rse offers quite a few vantage po ints to th e spectators, and a well -prepared track to the racers. However, by the end of the very long program the spectators are tired and, even though silencers are req uir ed, thoroughly rung-a-dung (ring-a-dinged?), while the track has deteriorated. The CMC does try to do a lot for the racers, hence the lo ng program. Mos t of the action was centered about seco nd or third place with no real contention for the first spot, with most of the to p riders elsewhere. The 500 class with its "2500 Dollar Duffers Club" (membership in this elite section of the junio r Class requires at least $2500 worth of equipment) slowed things down a good deal. The spectator co uld find so me break in th e ro u tine b y walking over to the adjo in ing dragstrip and watching the cars lay smoke. As a matter of fact, there were some leather pants to b e seen there as well. At th e drags yo u could find inten se co mpe tit io n , like a VW SuperB eetle up agai nst a '57 Lincoln Continental. (T he V\V won with a scorching run in th e magic 25 -second bracket.] . 100 clas s mo to cross seems to b e j ust stuffed th ese days with yo ungst ers under 18 . As Go rd on jen nings relat ed in an article in a recent co py of CYCL E m a ga z ine , the son (or daughter) becomes the veh icle for the parent's ego. One young fellow crashed after b eing fo rce d over the berm. When the do ti ng dad found that the mo tor cycl e was unab le to continue, he flew into a rag e, stalked off, leaving the kid to push th e b roken $800 bike back to t he pits by hirn sel f. Although it is quit e lengt hy, the program offered by t he CMC gives everyone a chanc e: to race , three times, against equal co mpe t it io n. (Results o n p age 36) The course offered good spectating points . The first few turns got a little te nse at times.
