OVER 1% MILLION IMPORTED LAST YEAR M/C'S Reflecting a tremendous increase in demand, motorcycle imports zoomed again in 1971, according to E.W. "Pete " Colman, President of the Motorcycle Industry Council. By the year's end, Colman said, motorcycle imports had risen 41 percent over 1970 to a total of nearly 1,539,000 units. The value of 19 71 imports i n c r e a s e d even mo re dramatically, 61 percent, and reached a final amount of $495 million. The calculated duty p aid on mo to rcycle imports expanded the coffers of th e U.S. Treasury by nearly $30 million. The M.LC . believes that the west coast dock strike during 19 71 was at least partly responsible for import figures not being even higher than they were. Colman pointed out that the number of imports dropped only in one displacement class, under 50cc, to a total of 127,000 compared with the 163,000 imported the previous year. All other classes showed moderate to substantial gains bo th in number and valu e. Ex ceptional increases were noted in the 90cc to 190cc class, which soared • from 241 ,000 units in 1970, to more than 419,000 units in 1971 for a wh opping gain of almost 74 percent. The largest class of mo torcycle imports was th e over 29 0cc gro up wh ich regist ered a 5 7 p erc ent rise from 299 ,00 0 to over 4 69, 000 .
