The L iverp o o l team won 38 -34 but the American visitors kept the crowd on it s toes with another d ashi n g display of full-throt tle riding. O nce agai n the inspiration was provid ed b y Bill Cody, who has really settled into th e A ustralian style of racing and who h as already been offered a ret urn co ntract to race in Sydney next summer on a season basis. Co d y rode five ti mes for a total of 14 points in th is m atch , only one off a maximum. He dro pped h is o nly point to local ace, Jim Ryman, in a thrilling h eat 9 . Cody extended Ryman all the way. One of his m o st impressive w ins was in the 11th h eat when h e came out of t he gate b ehin d experienced A ustralian internationals G reg Kentwell and Cec Platt but b u stl ed his way to th e fro nt by the time the pack emerged from the first t urn. Cody capped t he night wi th yet another great win in t he - top point scorers' race. He faced Ryman, Sonny Nutter a nd St eve Bast, who h as q ualified after a special run-off with Platt and rival captain, Bill Landels. The Americans were again 100 percent triers and the crowd really t o o k them to h eart . Steve Bast h ad one of his best nig hts to date with seven points, including two wins. Nutter was also in fine form fo r eight points. Skipper DeWayne Keeter seemed a little out of touch with only four points but DeWayne is a real enigma and can bob u p at the least expected mo ment. Unfortunately Mike Konle, the hero of the team's draw with the Sydney Showground th e previous week, struck bike bother and m issed h is last race co mpletely. Mike Bast h ad a poor night score -wise b ut put quite a deal of effort into h is riding. . By the end of this meeting the C a li f o r n i an s were p roving wi lling learners and were fast adapting t hemselves to j he st range co nditions in A ustralia. There is no doubt all they need is m o re ex perience on different types of t racks to bring them right to the fo re in international competition. FoHowing the m ee ting their bikes were frei gh t ed straight through to New Zealand where they are scheduled to race next week. Keeter and team manager Chuck Jones have raced there previou sly so they should be able to pass o n sound advice to the other team m embers. Jones, well p leased with things after the Australian t o u r , is hoping for success in New Zealand, where the opposition should be slig htly less fo rmidable than in A ustraIia. : The importation of t he American team to Australia was a gamble that paid off handso mely in all ways. Wherever the team raced, box office was good and the riders t hemselves gained that most val uable commodity that m o n ey can never b u y but which will undoubtedly ass ist their climb to the top experience. S hould t he team return here next season there is every chance they will be a far tougher proposition now th ey have acclimatised themselves to racing here. J IM AIR EY WINS AUSTRALIAN C HA MPIO NS H IP Jim Airey confirmed h is rating as Australia's top speedway rider when h e won his fo u rth National Australian Championship in Adelaide recen tl y.
