Today saw the Corona Raceway p lay host to a gaggle of California' s finest motocrossers as they staged their first money event. Was it a success? Is the Pope Catholic ? Since this was the first time that any of the above had ridden Corona I wa n ted to know what the y thought of the co urse. Without ex ception, they said it was a great course. All thought that the way the course was maintained to keep t he dust to zero was the greatest th ing since s e x . Brad Lackey was a rea l paradox , hc rode the 500 class on his CZ attacking the co urse every inch of th e way, he loo k ed as good as it's possib le to look . Mike Cram push ed him in every mo ta with his Maico bu t had to settle fo r second w ith Bruce Torbett in for th ird . In th e 250 class, Brad couldn 't hit his fan ny with both h ands: Didn't show in t he top three. When the smoke and dust cleared, Costa Mesa's Baro n (Pen) reigned as king .with great starts in all three mo to s and subsequent victories in the first two. Baron and McDougal (Pe n) tangled while leading the ten bi k e p ack in th e last heat and both we nt down giving the wi n to a fas t impro ving Davey Carlso n (Yam) and Volkman (Bul) was th ird. Overall , Davey added a third and fo urth to annex second spot over McDougal, who had two seconds and a fourth . In the to ugh 250 class, McDougal (Yam) p ut togeth er two firsts and a third to edge Morris Malone (AJ S), who had a first, second, an d a fifth in the three motes. Dave Boydstun (AJS) was third o verall and did a great job in heat one, leading the first four laps before ' yielding to McDougal at th e checker by ten feet . Boydstun also had a fourth and fifth to enchance his point total. Entr ies in the 500 Intermediate /Expert class were sparse an d th e riders ran with th e 250's and as per usual, Mike Cram (Mail prevailed, this time over Bruce TorbettIblus] fro m NationaJ City. The Schoolboy class saw three different winners, and little Jeff Ward (Yam ) nail ed down the top spot over Brad Dutoit (Yam) and last week 's winner, Mark Shader (Han) . G ene Woods (Han) won the first mota, but bike problems fo rced hina o ut of t he second heat while leading and in a good sp ot to sweep. Ken Smith (Yam) won Division Two of the 100 J unior. class by virtue of two win s and a third. Phil Ny land (Hod) grabbed the firs t race after Smith went down while in front. In 125 Division Two, Brad Salata do mi nated with three wins. Brad looks good and may soon be riding Intermediate. The 250 Junior (Divisio n One) class had three different heat winners ; Tim Morgan (CZ), Joe Dyer (Gre) , and John Paulding (Hus ), but Dyer add ed tw o seco nds to take o verall honors. Robert Crecelius (Gre) walked away with the 500 Junior event, winning th e firs t two heats b y huge margin s and th e last b y ten yard s over Zach Lindborg (Suz). "S uper J oe" Root on a new super fast 125 Bultaco Pursang ran away with the large Proficient Novi ce trophy by winning all th ree of his mo tos. The only rider that gave Root any comp etition all day was Larry Robertson (Bu l) who took home second p lace b rass with three seconds. These fine No vice riders seemed to move out from th e rest of the pack as though they were riding a 250 or larger bike. With the e ve r-w inning Pinneri brothers visiting Bay Mare minus bikes, th e 100 Pro ficient Novices p roduced Steve Rawson (Suz ) , Mike Po rter (Hod), and Kevin Love (Ho d) fo r first, second and third respectively . These three rid ers sh ould go to law sch ool, ge t together an d then form a p art nersh ip . Do n 't they so und like a typical law firm? Rawson, Porter , and Lo ve. One of th e finest proficien t 2~0 Novi ces ob served at Bay Mar e th is year, Ken Janson (CZ) cap t ured first overall again today with his smooth , fast style. Ho wever , Richard Kaeding (Mai) made J anson work extra hard. A glutton for punishment, Bill Kelly (Hus) another one of Bay Mare's top riders, rode the Viewfinders Grand Prix at Indian Dunes for 45 minutes, packed up his b ike, and hauled over to Bay Mare in time for his first mota in the Open Experienced Novice class. Kelly was first over th e start hill in th e first mota, but had to settle for a sec ond as Mike Pace (CZ) scooted by for the win. Pace, on his fast vehicle won all three motos. Next weekend Bay Mar e will host a regular da y of mo tocross wi th cash going to Ex p erts and trophies to Juniors . Only th e Experts will ru n on t he super-large hill th at usu ally provides plen ty of thrills fo r co mpetito r and spectator alike. T he " Old Ti m ers" (m otocro ss club limi te d to members 40 an d o ver) will also run . (R esults o n p age 32) -
