125's: The Lions' Pride :;; ::< ~ w Z W ..J U >- U .. By Buzz Bat y WILMINGTON, CAL., Mar. 3, 1972 This bunch of Friday-night CMC motocrossers top themselves each week. If DeSoto, Thorwaldson and Hart aren't sending your blood pressure high enough to pop a vein in the 500 class, then Rapp, Pessey , Messer, R unyard, and Payne drive it high enough in the 250's so that the shrieking, whining 125's of Bower, Rodgers, Rapp, an d Zhart come on and it's "Katie, bar the door". Tonight was no exception. All of the Expert classes, could be won or lost on the last round. Bill Payne is back after being out quite a spell with a broken leg. Good Lord. T he way he was herding his Maico around in the 250 division tonigh t, you would swear he hadn't been away. David Pessey told me during the b reak between p ract ice and the start of racing, that h e was goi ng to win, and win he did, b ut no t w ith out Payne making him wo rk h is b utt off to do it. Bill fo llowed David 's Ossa in the firs t two ro unds but in the third round Bill got one of those 'oh-rny-goodness' starts, that carried all the way to the checker, giving him second overall to David's first, A new name shows in the win column this week: Bryar Holcomb got in for third. The real cardiac race of the night was put on by those we-ain't-got-thehorsepower but-wc's-quick 125 Experts. Chuck Bower and Dave Rodgers may be the best of friends off the track, but on the track, it's each man take his best shot and the devil take what's left. Rodgers won the first moto with his Bultaco, Bower the second with his Penton. When the third moto came up, you could feel the crowd's expectations building. Bower jumped into a huge lead right off the starting gate! He held that lead until his rear wheel cleared the starting gate, when Dave caught him. Sports fans, that's the way it went for five, fast, furious laps. Chuck and Dave were taking a line through the starting area that was spectacular. These two were going wide, WFO power slides that took them right up to t he pit area fence. How good was this rac e? The inside of the fence was lined solid with every racer that could fin d ro o m, and that included most of the Experts. They traded the lead four ti mes on the last lap, twice with only six turns left to the flag, with the sound of their engines actually being drowned out by a grandstand packed crowd, all standing, cheering, clapping and shouting for their favorite. Chuck Bower pushed his Penton in for the win and the overall first. It's not right to say that Dave Rodgers lost. When two really talented young men put on that kind o f a race, there are no losers. Another name to show up in thewin list was Bob Hershey of Woodland Hills . Bob led Brad Lackey and Dave O'Haver across the finish line for the 500 Expert win. Young Steve Brown, the sharp Intermediate in the 5 00 class, who was close to the point lead in the Anniversary Series being run by the CMC , ran into some hard luck tonight aboard his Maico. Leading the first moto, Steve suffered what he though was a twisted ankle, but later, medical examination found it to be b roken in two places. Steve will be in a cast fo r a couple of months. Happy spectating, Steve! (Results on pa~e 32) Chuck Bowers moving the dirt around on turn one .
