Gaylor Moser explodes through a Rawhide turn .
By Buzz
ELSINORE, CAL ., feb. 27, 1972 - I
knew right awa y that it was going to be
one of those days when the Experts
wished they were running 10 minute
motos instead of 25 minutes.
I had j ust walked up on the top ridge
of Rawhide's motocross course to get an
overall high look at the track. As I stood
there with the late morning sun heating
the air I was trying to get my heaving
lungs to accept, I saw a horned toad
co me up out of his hole, look around,
reach back in his hole pull out a
canteen, drop it around his neck and
take off up the h ill, you think it wasn't
hot.
That Mettco sponsored pair of
Penton riders, Chuck Bower and Bruce
McDougal, traded first and seconds in
the new CMC program of two motos for
the Experts. Each moto for all Expert
classes was at least 25 minutes long, and
when the lads pulled into the pits their
faces showed the strain. f
It is really a shame that either Chuck
or Bruce had to be second as both rode
two of the best races I have seen either
of them run. Bruce got first place under
\to
.
Baty
with the best finish in the last mota.
Tommy Croft is a young lad from
San Diego that a lot of the racers are
go ing to be loo king at the ba ck of as he
gets faster and steadier each race. Tom
brought his 125 Penton into third place
back of Bower and McDougal to
co mp lete a 1-2-3 sweep.
Mike Runyard came back from his
Saturday crash at Corona Raceway to
notch first overall in the 250 Expert
class. A tired Gaylon Mosier led an even
more pooped J on Derhammer across the
line fo r second and third in that order.
Marty Tripes ' had mechanical
problems that have b een riding his ba ck
and his Yamaha for what seems like
forever, his only ch ance to c he er c ame
when little brother Mike picked up his
first trophy ever in th e 125 Jr. Div. I
aboard his CZ.
Gary Harris got the wick all the way
up to win the 500 Expert class with his
Husky. Mark Anderson took second on
another Husky as Rich Thorwaldson
and his Suzuki encountered water
problems with his ignition and had to
settle for third.
