In all other types of major racing press
releases would be co m in g in daily
>- announcing who is going to be entered
U with what and tub-thumping would be
at a rapid rate.
Unfortunately, in motorcycle racing,
and especially for Daytona each year,
who is riding what is always one of the
best kept secrets in all of racing. It
curtails general interest, holds down
attendance and helps generate false
rumors. Yet it continues to prevail year
in and year out.
But
each year CYCLE NEWS
attempts to bring the readers some type
of rundown and p review of t he b ig o ne
at -Davto na , in spi te of the lack of
pub licit y and promotion fo r t he best
known road race in t h e world.
The A MA, which guides the destin y
of maj or professio nal road racing in
America , has traditiona lly no t sent ou t
ad vance p ress releases as to who and
what will be at Daytona on Marc h 12 .
T his comes in sp ite of t he fact that
advance entries close for the event
eit he r three o r fo ur weeks before the
race. Maybe next year.
Daytona has always held a certain
magic for race followers . A rider is
really not a racer unless he can say he
has
r iddess
at
Daytona.
A
died-in-the-wool fan is not Class A
unless he has been to Daytona at least
once.
Things have changed rapidly in recent
years o n the 3.81 mile per lap course
that features banked turns so steep that
cycles and cars fall down them if not

and many will have them for thc Classic

The BSA and Triumph t riples were
introduced to road racing at Daytona in
1970 and have taken five of the six
winner's circle positions the past two
years. The other spot went to a Honda
Four.
The Triumph triple holds both the
one lap oval ti me trial mark and the one
lap qualifying reco rd . The BSA mult i
has the 200 mile race reco rd at the
famed Florida plant that first hosted
cycle racing in 19 6 1.

of any model ever raced at Daytona.
Dick Mann, Gene Romero, Tom
Rockwood, Don Cas tro , John Hateley
and Eddie Mulder will lead the
American group with John Coop er of
Ontario fame expected to be a late
entry.
Mann, of course, has been the winner
the last two years running and was
ranked the best in America in '7 1.
Romero has finis hed second to Dick th e
past two years in a ro w.
Cas tr o finis hed third two years ago
and Rockwood, who will be ridi ng fo r
