SY D N E Y, AUSTRA LIA T he American speedway team now touring Australia went down again to selected local teams last weekend. On Friday night, the Californians raced at the Rowley Park Speedway, Adelaide, against a composite South AustrlianfVictorian side and crashed to a heavy defeat. The Australians gave the American visitors little chance to settle down on th e tri cky circuit and hammered away at their local track advantage. Only American to offer any opposition was captain, Dewayne Keeter , who is putting all his previous overseas speed wa y experience to good use this trip. The riders have been faced with a heavy travelling schedule. jetting from state to state across the vast Australian continent and this has no doubt made them weary when it comes to business on the track. The night after their Adelaide appearance, they new back to Me lbourne for another match against the Kangaroos. They were only a few points in arrears when rain washed out the meeting mid-way thro ugh th e team match. A ni gh t lat er , on Su nday, it was on " C> rf. Keeter was again an inspiration and took seven rides fo r a total of 18 points. Terrific going in this company. DeWayne owed much of his success to the incredible tuning of Bob "Cowboy" Sharp, a former Australian solo champion with whom he is residing while in Sydney. Sharp took over DeWayne's Jawa and made it pop like there was n o tomorrow. Keeter came good with wins over Olsen, Bill Landels (a Liverpool big gun); in fact all the top Liverpool riders. He was well supported by Bill Cody who amassed 13 points in another great fighting effort including a cracking win over World Champion, Olsen. Unfortunately Sonny Nutter and Steve Bast were hit by machine trouble during the meeting and both riders were forced out of one race each. Mike Bast, w ho did not score a point, and Mike Konle were replaced by manager Chuck Jones once. On each occasion their rides were taken by substitute reserve, Billy Sanders, a local Liverpool rider who, at the age of 15 , promises to be a world star in the near future. Sande rs managed three points fro m his two races for America. The Liverpool riders raced to an early lead b ut the determination of the Americans whittled this back and at one stage the scores were level. However when the vital heats cropped up towards the end of the match, the Aussies kicked home the big points that earned them the win.
