Back on ~ the straightaway. Tuck in and twist that z throttle all the way open... w How does a racer feel when on a fast d track? Maybe' like the above random ~ thoughts, maybe scared, maybe not, but over 200 riders had o ne thought in common today. They like the feeling it gives them. They like going fast , and by fast we are talking speeds in ex cess of 80 mph into the sweeper. The Lightweight M.C. hosted a super fast smooth scrambles at 395 Cycle Park, home of District 3 7 scrambles racing for the past several weeks. Once again the rider turno ut was spinkled generously with AMA Novi ce and J unior professional riders, enhancing the spectator appeal greatly. Results of this race are listed as provisional because of the fact that six riders were disqualified and one rider was ejected fro m the pa rk. Causes for this dramatic action varied , but several riders were ca ught trying to ride the same bike in two classes or ride lightweight b ikes in a heavyweight class. To overcome a sudden popularity in rules violation, the Lightweight M.C. announced that next week, all violators will be reported to the District 37 Competition Commitee. Possible penalties include loss of 50% of accumulated points. The T.T.M .C. reports that during last week's 250 Novice Main Event, all riders, save one, viol ated the red flag and the Red Cross flag and continued to race on a course obstructed b y both ~ ~ - -- -..:-- - 250 Expert S teve Nichols nOxl manages to stay ahead of Scott Smith in this turn, but not for long. an injured rider and an ambulance. The results of this caused all riders to be disqualfied and the one rid er , Lewis, who did ackn owledg e the flags is to b e declared winner. Tad Willis on a 250 Buddah Bultaco played Hare and Hound with the boys while winning his heat ra ce and the 250 Novice Main. It was Skip Christ y 's first 125 Amateur race and he faired well, taking a second pl ace behind Greg Mitchell. Greg rode hard to a comm a nd in g win. Seemed like Brian King had most of the fun duking it out with Skip and finishing third. Scott Smith , Rob Morrison, Dennis Briggs, Charles Soderstrom and Rick Hutchins had no problems winning their respective races . Bob Hosford seems to be having equipment problems. To beat a horsepower problem, he rides over his head. The more he rides over his head t he more he does heart stopping You can tell it 's T om White by the grin. numbers. I may be wrong, but to me it seems that his Yammies ain't a-goin' as fast as they uster. Names we had riding the Open Expert class you wouldn't believe. How about Tom White, Steve Nichols, John Sprague, Fred Timbulax, Walt Foster, Mike Myers, Sandy Armstrong, Bob Greenstreet and Rick Marquis? Tom White pretty much dominated the Open Experts with a first overall. St eve Nichols was right in there to edge out John Sprague. The second ma lo saw White slide out in the second lap. Nichols grabbed the lead and h eld it b ut White got back up and made his way th ro ugh the pack fo r a second place. The L ightweight M.C. wi shes two important t h ings noted . Firs t : Next week Feb. 27 will be a rough scrambles using the big j ump backwards . Second : mo st imp o rt an t , heavyweights will rid e first. (R esu lts on page 32)
