TROJAN - --RE-NAME ITAFTER BOB SANDERS t By Art Loya SOUTH GATE, CAL., Feb. 17, 1972 Some of the riders are beginning to call it Bob Sanders Speedway. And why not? Tonight, Sanders wrote a new page of history for the Trojan Speedway record books by blanking out a field of over 50 entries in making a clean sweep of all main events (six) in the combined TT and nat track motorcycle ra cing program. It wasn't so much that Sanders and his T & R Industries' Kawasakis made a sh ambles of all the major events, but the astonishing part of it was that he was doing it for the' second time in less than a month . Sanders became the first rider in the track's history to tum this trick onJ an. 27. NEW RECORD TURNOUT FOR DMP Even in the moment of unquestionably his biggest triumph, Sanders gave much of the cred it to his tune-up man, Richard "Rip" Sweeney. It was a beautiful day in the desert and everyone enjoyed the track . The only problem was the mo tos had to be cut down a bit but the last of 60 motos was finished up just before dark . Sharon Staten once again won the Powder Puff class with her Ossa. Dottie Frost was only able to m uster a third place in the P.P. but she captured the wi n in the 60cc mini-bike class aboard her Yamaha, Lee Peterson took his 60cc Yamaha to the win in the 70cc mini class. Roger Dickens brought out his CZ and once again put it on the old timers division. The 100 Intermediate class started with only three riders, but finished with a three way tie for first. Steve Aageson (R ic) . Morgan Malloco (Yam) and N. Wyckoff (Yam ) were the riders. The speedy Suzuki of Tracy Walt ers was again put to good use as he won the 125 ' Intermediate class by also whooping it on' all the 125 Seniors. Troy Breker took his Yamaha to th e Senior win. ~ Mike Faulkner broke the frame o n his Husky in practice so he borrowed a CZ and won the 250 Intermediate class, as Rex Slaten took his CZ to an months", said Sanders . The fast start enabled Sanders to hold off Mike Clarke (Bul), Dan Corbett (Bul), and Mark Revels (Bul) all the way to the ch ec kered in a field of 12 in the 250 TT Main, and then followed up by lit erally giving the likes of Corbett, and speedway Class A riding star, Larry Shaw (H .D), a riding lesson they will not soon forget in the 250 F.T . feature event. "The best thing I like about these riders is that they don't give up. Sure, they get a little dis couraged when they have to chase Sanders, but they are still in there trying hard and any given number of riders have the potential to beat Sanders with the right riding equipment," stated Rene Armenta, track president. One of the best heats of the evening was staged with riders Joe Brown (Bul), Jim Mill er (a ss) , Paul Coberly (Bul) , Bill Wright (11-0 ), and Bill Adargo (Bul). All outstanding Junior riders, Brown and Miller provided most of the fireworks as both battled for the lead. Brown led the first two rounds, but Miller the superior ---------------0: I DRACO'S MOTORCYCLES lAW ASAKI ONLY O ne of Oran ge Cou nty 's Largest Stoc k of lAW ASAII MOTORCY CLES & PARTS Motorcycle Insurance Financing A va il ab l e Master Charge - Bankamerlcard 16295 Standard SA 543-9688 I I 00100100100100 RUSTYCHAINITIS? it 2 tdd! Toms of the National Highway Trafic Safety Administration has asked the Motorcycle Industry Council to develop experimental safety motorcycles in cooperation wi th th e Department of Transportation. "We believe the innovative safety concepts developed t hrough cooperative experimental motorcycle programs can have a profound effect upon motorcycle crashes and crash injuries," Toms wrote in a letter to the Council onJanuary 25. "As one example, an ti-skid brakes alone could prevent we ll over 30,000 motorcycle crash es each year In this co u nt ry. " "It is our sin cerest hope th at t he member co mpanies of the Motorcycle Industry Council, individually or several jointly, will wish to undertake development of experimental safety motorcycles with us," he continued . "We're delighted and honored by Mr. Toms' request," said E. W. "Pete" Colman, president of the Council. "Rider safety has always been a priority concern of our members. The tremendous surge in the number of motorcyclists over the past few years, coupled with the ever-growing vehicular traffic situation, requires an even greater effort on our part to seek solutions to the safety problems of motorcyclists." Already the Honda Motor Company has expressed a desire to cooperate in the program, and preliminary discussions are in progress. The Motorcycle Industry Council rep resents over 90 percent of the motorcycle ma n u fact urers. distributors, accessory firms and others directly involved in the motorcycle industry. .
