The boys' never-say-die attitude was appreciated by all and the experience gained at Liverpool is sure to stand them in good stead for the remainder of thcir tour. Thc Kangaroos fielded four local home track riders - Bill Landels, Dave Mills, Gregory Kentwell a nd J im Ryman - plus two interstate riders - Johnny Dcwhurst and Phil Crump. All the Aussies hit form and showed too m u ch solidarity and pace and home track knowledge for the Americans to master. T he U .S . stars, led by Keeter and team-managed by injured racer Chuck Jones and h is attractive wife, Donna, fo ught gamely but we re down on experience after the untidy confines of Costa Mesa. Alt ho ugh the Aussies raced away with the first three heats, the A merica ns hit back with d ashing wins by N utter an d Keeter to level th e score a t 18-18 after six race s. Th ey hung onto th e A ussies u n til the interval but in thc sec ond h alf th e su perior ga ti ng Kangaroo s sh owed ta c tics a nd th eir sp eed from th e starting tap es proved too great fo r th e Am eri cans to overcome. Th en th e Aussies raced away to m ount up the points. The American riders experienced great difficulty with th eir viso rs and goggles being filled in by flying wet d irt and this was a major factor in their defeat.
