The weekend was always
slated to be the last races for
the retiring "Mile Master" Bryan
Smith. And while it was widely
hoped he'd end his decorated
career in style, that seemed a
little far-fetched, even if Smith had
managed to stack up a seven-
race win streak in Sacramento
back in the day, prior to Mees'
active four-race streak.

Bryan Smith's runner-up career finale
wasn't quite the storybook win he'd
hoped for, but was something even more
unforge able. A erwards, the Crosley/
Howerton Motorsports ace said, "Now I
know I s ll remember how to ride a mo-
torcycle," Smith said. "The last few races,
as everybody knows, were a train wreck.
I'm totally happy. It would have been nice
to win, but [the way] the last couple years
have been, second is just fine. Again,
thanks to Jared Mees, for the bike."

TION TWINS
Home favorite Chad Cose desperately
wanted a victory in Sacramento, and he
put up a strong fight both days. A er
finishing second on Saturday, the Voodoo
Ranger/Roof Systems rider said, "It was a
good day in general. I knew Cory would be
fast all day. We were there with him in the
beginning. We actually had a li le bit of
an issue with the bike, but he was running
great. It's going to take everything we have
to beat him. Overall, I'm really happy with
second, but I really wanted to get a win."
Briar Bauman (1) chases
Sammy Halbert (69) on
Saturday night. Bauman
trails Mees by four points
with one race left. A win in
Charlotte will seal a third
title for Bauman.
