With speedway in full swing, sc he d ules were disrup ted on a large scale when torrential rain hit most states. Weather was th e worst on r eco rd for J anuary and the dirt t rac kers suffered accordingly. On Saturday, Jan. 15, two Tests were p lanned fo r the same night - Australia vs. Gr eat Britain in Melbourne and Australia vs. Sweden in Brisbane. Cyclone Althea, which de vast ated Townsville at Christmas, mo ved south t o Brisb ane and washed o u t the match against Sweden. This threw the remainder of th e Scandinavians' tour into chaos as their schedule was too tigh t to allow any major ch anges. The result was a postponement of the fift h Test against Australia until the follo wing Saturday in Brisb ane. Th en onto Sydney for only one Test, instead of the o rigin al plan o f two Tests, and a premature finish to the series. When the Brisbane T est was fin ally st aged , Sweden crumbled to their fo urth defeat of.th e tour. Au stralia won 67 -41 an d ab so lutely annihilated th e riders from th e Land o f Fre e Love. Th e result was particu larly pl easing for the h om e fans as the Kangaroo team was with out top st ars J im Airey and J ohn Langfield wh o w ere riding in Sydney . Stand-in sk ipp er J ohn Boulger fr om Sou th Australia again spearheaded the team to victo ry. His main backing cam e from local Queen sland ac e J ack White and former Scotsman Bill Landels wh o is n ow a hap p ily resident in th e su n D own Unde r. Swed en , expected to b e far more at h om e on th e little track, struggled unc h arac teristically and bombed o ut in a disappo inting way. A week earlier, d o wn so u th in Melb ourn e, it was a differen t sto ry fo r Australia as an unde r-stren gth Auss ie side went d own b y 20 points to a figh tin g, determined British team. That nigh t, Kan garo o n umber o ne Jim Airey was u navilabl e due to business commitm ents and number two m a n John Bougler wa s on duty in Brisbane, although that ma tch was rain ed o ff. Latter two were completely out of touch and did nothing to enh ance their reputations. T op scorer fo r th e homeste rs was Mildura rider, Ph il Crump. Crump is o nly 19 b ut has alr eady m ad e his ma rk in speedway and is a star performer in the British League Second Division. The Porns wa llo wed in glory by wall oping Au stralia from all angles to reduce their deficit in th e sev en m atch series to 3-2 after five Tests. All the touring Lions took to the small Melbourne track like du cks to water and only cap tain Nigel Boo cock, still suffering the effects of a recent inj ury , looked incapable of scoring. BLIGHTY BOUND Around this time of the year all the young hopefu l lo cal riders who in tend to find their fame and fortune in the Britis h League big time make their intentions known. This season more novices than eve r before ar e headed for En gland, along with those returning for a second and th ird fling. New riders alread y signed by British clubs include Mick Page (Syd ney ) who is destined for Elles mere Port in the Second Divisio n ; Dave Mills (Sydney) who will also ride in th e Se cond Division - for Hull Vikings: Joh n Titman (Queensla nd) the newest sensation who should set the Halifax First Divisio n t rack alight ; Den nis A lderto n (Sydney) wh o is bound for Second Divvy Pet er b orough ; Lindsay Davie s (Sydney) who has signe d fo r Boston; Mar k Perr an (Sydney) who will ride at Berwick; an d Neil Cameron (Sy d ney) wh o is taking a big p lunge and joining First Division challen gers Wolverhamp ton as a partner to World Cha mpion , Ole Olsen: Joining th is exodus will be Austral ia 's most promising rider, 17 .year-old Billy Sanders. This young man has shown all the attributes of being a really top racer since he began riding less than eigh t months ago. He has beaten world cla ss stars in Sydney and expert observers predict he'll be another Ronnie Moore. New Zealander Moore became the young est ever to win the world championship in 1954 at the age of 21. Given the right b rea ks Sanders could easily break this record and pick up the prize pot at an earlier age still. Sa nders shows superb control and te mperament and, assisted by his mentor, Australian new speed way ou tpost. H owev er, th e riders wh o inclu de Aussies Geoff Curtis, Bob Valentine and Bob Yo un g a nd Norwegian Odd Fossengen as w ell as quite a few English rid ers - received a scare r ec ently when the n ative Africans c aused a major disturban ce in th e towns of Salisbury and Gwelo, where the b oys rac e. Fortunately n o ne of th e speedway lad s was injured and all tracks were well clear ' o f th e vio lence but it put the breeze up th e promoters for a while, to be su re! NEW BIKE From Australia, n ews of a completely new sp eedway ma chine. It is called the SR60 and is virtually a ll-Austra lian made. The bike is the brainchild of Adelaide businessman, Fred Jolly, who formerly held the ESO franchise in this country. When the Cze choslovakia authorities deprived him o f the agenc y , J oil y set abo ut producing his own bike and he has come up with a remar kab le machin e. Call ed th e Southern Ra cer, it d evel ops 60 bhp (hence the title SR60) and is mainly a copy of the -J awa speedway en gine, excep t that it features an o verhead camshaft simila r to th e J ap an ese Kyokuto engine. T he frame is the exac t geo me try of a Jawa and , a ll in all , t he S R60 is a near repli ca. Th e b ik e will be tested on the trac k n ex t mont h by star ride rs Ole Olsen and J im Airey. If it performs as it loo ks, Jolly will h ave a wi nner and Aust rali a will be set to ch allenge th e wo rld mar ke t. T he n ew bi ke sh o uld cost aro und 51 ,200 b u t Jolly has no t ye t fixed a definit e p rice . He says, however , it will be m ore than competitive th an the Jawa. The bore (88 mm.) are the same as a Jawa but the co nr od is 3{8 in. shorte r to give increased acceleration from down low. A rotating magnet model Lucas SRI magneto is use d with a Delorto carb uretor featuring a special SR60 b ow!' Oil p ump is the Englis h pilgrim operating on the normal total loss system. "The SR60 has all theJawa dirt track features, plus an overhead camshaft and freer bearings", said Jolly. The engine is two p ounds lighter than a Jawa engine but the co mp lete bike is p ra ctic ally ( Contin ued onnext page)
