o M " '" '" e, By Buzz Bat y CARLSBAD, CAL., Feb. 13, 1972 - It N just had to be a neat kinda day wh en a C"l rider wh o was se verely injured ret urns t o the racing scene. Dave Smith of San u. Diego, who had that b ad number at N ~ .g ~ w Z W ..J U >- U Lions J an . 2 1, and had rumors going aro und abou t his , as Mark T wa in o nce said " p remat u re d ea th " , was b ac k pushin ' th e 5 0 0 Exp ert on his Maico, showing no loss o f t alent or d esir e. Nice to have you b ack, Dav e! I don't kn ow h ow man y of you fo lks remember the New York Yankees o f so m e ye ars back, they won so m an y ballgames and so many World Series, that people were saying they should be busted up, so that some others could win. We have the same thing in motocross; people were going around here today muttering and stompin' and saying, bust up th at team of Jim Beauchamp and Harley-Davidson, nobody can beat 'em. Either take the rider away from the bike, or the bike away from the rider, but as a te am they're unbeatable. It seems the only Expert around these parts who can st op this Jim Beauchamp and his 125 H-D is Lady Lu ck. Jim swept all three rounds today a nd didn't even seem t o be breathing hard. Chuck Bowers did everythin g but throw his Penton at him (m a ybe h e sh ould) a nd all t o n o avail. Ch arlie h ad to settle for No.2, but he did t ry harder. He had to ; in th e last m oto, h e dropped it in the first t u m , and had t o ride his t o-t o o ff. He got b y the wh ol e field (excep t Beauchamp) for hi s t hi rd -M ike Cram is back on a big bor e and w ins th e 500 Exp erts. • David Pessy on a clean looking machin e. second of the d ay. T om Croft pocketed third plac e money a boar d his Penton, Gaylon Mosier a nd David Pessy had a real war going in th e 250 Expert. Coming up t o the last moto, Gaylon's Maico a n d Pessv's Ossa each earned en ough points to win. If Pessy co uld win with Mosier second, they would be tied , David would be the winner b y the rule of best finish - last moto. Gaylon co uld make it clear cut with a win . David didn't leave anything back in the bam, he used it all. On the last lap, he got b y Gaylon at the bottom of th e hill for ab out 10 feet when he stuttered for a silly millimeter an d Mosier repassed . They hit th e flag, Gaylon first, David second, so close you almost needed electronic timing. Kelvin Franks sa ys it lo oks like Terry Trachy, CZ-mounted, from Tustin is high point man after today's third round in the Anniversary Series. Today was the halfway point of the series, the next one is Feb . 27th at Rawhide. (Results on page 40)
