By Sportphoto PORTERVILLE, CAL.• Jan. 30.1972 On what most riders opined as "the best track surface ever see n in Porterville", the Spinners M.C. began their scrambles season today. Although a few unavo idable bumps kept reappearing. there was absolu tely no dust and the traction was super. Your reporter was practicing during the week with a speedometer and was h illing speeds of 60 plus. I do n't ride near as fast as l fi-year-old Rand y Limbeck. Limbeck. riding a 400 Maico out of J& R Recreational Sales final ly unseated the king of t h e desert . Ken Hab eck. Limbeck was overall wi nner. The course mu st have b ee n too fast for desert fox Ha beck, as he could o n ly manage a fifth overall and fif th in class. O ut of th e first 17 finis hers, 15 w er e Open bi kes, wi th Ray Cra wfo rd winnin g the 25 0 class aboard a n ew Yamaha MX rid in g o ut of Yamaha o f Bend. Tom R obinson, riding a DKW. was 15th overall and firs t in th e 125 class. Fran k Su nada (C Z) passed Li m b ec k at a gas stop and reports from spectators say Limbeck passed Sunada back in an unbelievable spot. The J&R Maico t hat Lim beck was riding was just about de molished at the end of the 72 m iles. One shock co mpletely broke lo o se . the other one broke bad enough that the rear tire wo re a big hole through the fen der. The course was fast, b ut was demanding. Vay choppy in p laces and very few places to sit down and relax. Many r id ers not fa milar with th e t err ain we re afraid to pass on the n arro w trail. This 12 -mil e course was ro ck-fr ee a nd a p ers on could rea lly charge thro ugh the sage brush. T his course will get m u ch b etter with more ri d ing as th e riders themselves will widen it. Rick just couldn't get and his Bultaco took first. with Jerry around the fast Honda of Ron Dign so Henson (Suz) and Russel Johnson (Bul) taking second and third in that order. he and his Suzuki had to settle for second, with Ron taking first and not The third trophy was won in the 250 A too far behind was Al Amyx riding a Main. There were numerous riders in the Hodaka. 250 class as seen by the A, Band C The 150 A Main saw the likes of two Main Events. As we said Ron Parry and or mo re restarts with no rider getting his Bultaco won the 250 A Main in a past the first corner. Finally the race got fantastic battle with Bill Oliver and his underway w ith Dan Daniken (Mon] Bultaco.
