DESERT STAR CLARK WINS SA Y MARE CASH l N By Art Cox MOORPARK, CAL., Feb . 6, 197 2 - A regular d ay of m otocross produced plenty of a ction toda y at Bay Mar e Race Track. Junior riders competed for trophies, while the Seniors raced fo r cash. All classes were able t o ride th ree 15 ·minute m o ro s. Seniors were run up the large Expert hill d uring their events. T erry . Clark, the number o ne T railbike Des ert rider sh owed t h e 125cc Experts that long duration desert riding p ay s o ff in moto cross. After o n ly fair st arts, Clark, riding just short of fantastic on his Harle y- Davidson, m oved up t o first spot during tw o of the three Senio r motos. Clark acco m p lished this during the las t few minutes of each moto. After the leaders began to slow, h e shot out to take first o verall with a I , 2, 1. Ken Zarht (Bul) a nd Brad Blair ( Bu l) grabbed sec ond a nd third spot cas h . It wa s Bultaco day duri n g th e l25 cc Novice events. First three ov erall winners were on new Pursangs . Sup er Joe R oot (B ul}, as he did last weekend, gave anoth er th re e fin e fast rides fo r first overall with a I, 2, 1. Se cond was Ron A cevedo (Bul) with Dennis Hail e (Bul) third. Three lIuskies dominated the less th an five race experience Open class with Gary Lunsfo rd (lI us) rep eating last week's perfo rmance taking first in b oth o f his moto s for a large o vera ll tr ophy. Ri ch Lawson (lIus) and Wayn e Brown (CZ) t ied for second. A bike racing club with memb er ship lim ited to racing ent husiasts o ver 40 , th e "Old tim ers" came en masse. Jim Burgess (S uz ) was fir st o ver the st art hill in b oth motos but managed to let a few o f his "buddies" by in each m oto before th e c h ec kered flag. Burgess 5 , 3 tied with Nick McLerd 3, 5 for second o verall. First place also produced a ti e between T om H oyle (Bul) 1,2 a nd J ohn Si ebrant (G re) 1,2. Ba y "'Iare rider s' " Sportsm a n Committee" has re commended (wit h management's ap p ro val) to help riders classed as an "Amateur" ge t a bett er break for their day's riding efforts. In the past when a r egula r day of motocross is held , there are two groups, Novices a nd E xperts. Novices rid e for tr ophies an d Exp er t s co m pete fo r cas h (usually p aid t o th e first t h ree places) . Amateurs st ill have to ride with the Experts . As an Amateu r rider com peti ng against some o f t he top Experts it usually is quit e h ard to ta ke h ome o ne o f th e top th re e (money) places . So what h appens : T he Amateu r rides for fun with not m u ch cha nce o f acquiring something for his effo rts ! In the fu ture at Bay Mare when an Amateur sign s up , he will designate " cash" or "trophy " o n th e e n try blank. If he sele cts cash , h e t a kes h is c ha nces and will b e scored wi th Ex perts a nd paid accordingly . If h e goes for a troph y he will still rid e with the E xp er ts but will be scored separa t ely for a tro p h y.
