Stellar Lions Lineup By Buzz WILMINGTON, CA., Jan. 28, 1972 Tonight's CMC motocross saw not only a large field but a stellar one to boot: John DeSoto, Brad Lackey, Rich Thorwaldson, Tim Hart, Dave Pessey, Mike Cram, Tom Rapp, Dave Rodgers. I don't know what got the guys all pumped tonight, but right from the first drop of the starting gate it was as if all 260 riders had but one control on their scoots; the gas, opened to the last click. Now there is nothing wrong in a rider going out to do the deed and thinking "gas it," but, tonight everybody was out there WFO. About midway through the second round of mot ds some of the lads began letting their throttle hands write checks that their ability couldn't cash. The ambulance had to roll five times with injured riders, three with serious injuries . It was during the last 125 Expert mota that Tom Cook got off at the bottom of the right tum jump at the end of the back straight. Tom was down righ t in the groove and despite Baty everyone's attempt to slow or stop the rest of the field (even Brad Lackey was on the track trying to protect the fallen Cook), one rider insisted on zapping the slowed leader Dave Rodgers. It didn't do him any good as he doesn't show in the top three. If the sport is ever to reach the big time, dumb stunts like that will have to draw some kind of penalty. Rogers got in for first overall after three hard-fought motos. John DeSoto figurcd to have his hands full in the 500 Expert class, what with all the talent that was on hand, but the first two motos were won by John going away. The crowd had to wait until the last mota to see DeSoto off the line in tenth spot, work his way past Lackey, Hart, Cooke and Thorwaldson, with the crowd cheering, and announcer Bruce Flanders' voice up in high register "John nailed Peter Lamppu at the last jump twenty yards from the flag to win by a bike length."
