Box 10059, Santa A na , Calif 92711 The Hotel Lucerna 250 will be the opening event of the 19 72 Baja Championship and Manufacturers Trophy Series of five off-road races on April 8th. The other races of the Series will be listed in the Calendar section of this publication. The race will start and finish at kilometer post 37, 22 miles west of Mexicali on th e Tijuana Ilighway. The southbound course fo llows roads made by woodcutters and ranchers for the most part. It leads a long the base of the Sierra de J uarez mountains west of Lag una Salada, through Con st itu ci o n National Park, over the Sierra and d own in to Valle de T rinidad . 120 miles from the start. Check number one will be at about the 60 mile point w ith water and gas available. Valle de Trinidad will be check number two and the main refueling point. From there the route follows the road to San Felipe for 19 miles to Cerro Borego, then up a crooked sand wash for six miles. The course then becomes very rough , rocky and crooked as it leads over a mountain pal\s and down into the spectacular Arroyo Grande. Arroyo Grand is a smooth sand wash nearly 20 mi les long and varies from 10 to 100 feet wide with cliffs risin g on either side to 1000 feet in p laces . It has many very sharp turns. Too bad the racers won't have time to enjoy the wild beauty of this canyon. From the mouth of Arroyo Grande the track leads north toward the south end of Laguna Salada and veers left and rounds the tip of the Sierra de la Palmita range to check nu mber three which will be the same as check number one . The homestretch retraces the sou thbound route to the finish line. Radio communications will be maintained between the start-finish lin e and the check points. Personnel rescue will be provided. The entry fee for the Hotel Lucema 250 will be $ 150 per vehicle. Membership in Baja Racing Association will be req uired of all contestants and costs 50 pesos ($4) for the year. Impound and inspection will be on Friday, April 7th at the Hotel Lucerna. The Off-Road Owners and Drivers Assn., under the direction of Butch Dunn has been asked to handle technical inspection and rule interpretation. Rules, regulations, and car classes will generally follow those used by such organizations as SKaRE, ARVARA, and the Mint, Motorcycle classes will be 125,250 and Open. Drawing for starting positions will be held at the Hotel Lucema in Mexicali at 8 p .m. on March 1 1. Subsequent entries will be assigned positions in o rder of receip t.
