In the fir st heat for the 125 Senio rs, a ra ce which saw Dave R odgers, Chris Mo gensen a nd Ken Zahrt (t wic e) climb from th e sa d d les o f th eir rolling stock, Rapp staged a c om e-from-behind effort, while putting a colla r o n Kenny C oo k (Bul}, Terry Clark (H ·D) and Steve Merkel, wh o was ripping up the course on still a no ther Bultac o, Then, in th e fin al round for the 125 's, Rapp h ad t aken th e lead from t he start lin e hill, o n ly to run smack in t o a bl ack fl ag which was flying in th e aft ern o o n bree ze , as a result of a firs t lap ac ci d ent th at involved Co ok an d Rueben Benites. On the r estart, however, R app d efe ated Clark, Don Weeks (Pen) a nd Larry Watkins (DKW) for the o vera ll vic tory. In the two events for the 250 Senior riders, Rapp go t p as t the sour-sounding bike o f T im Hart's in t he in iti al rn oto , whipping Dav e Rodger s (Bul}, Mike Run yard (Mon ), Doug Grant (AJS) and Rex Stat en , who was o nce again o n a swi ft CZ. Th e new champ ions go t the j ob d one with R on DeSoto, Bob Hershey , Greg R obertson , Bob F isk and Brad La ckey . Ridin g for American MX were Warren Burrel , Mik e Cram, Tim Har t, Ri ch Davis , a nd Bob Kul ek. Jim Ho o ver, a CZ rider fro m Up la nd , staged a big effo rt while leading the crew fro m th e Open Senior bri gade in their fir st m o to - on every lap but th e last. .. While turnin g ro u nds o f the Sh adow Gl en t rac k in 1:27 - one se cond fro m th e ab solute cou rse re cord - Ho ov er estab lished a len gth y lead, th at , seemingly , could n't be t ouched. Yet , h e fell on t he fin al lap , w hile trying t o p ass a slo wer rider, a nd Wils on got the ch eck er ed flag first . Even though the sec ond mo to for th e Opens w as to fa ll t o th e Lafayette lan cer , Brad Lackey , Wilson, by vit u re o f a seco nd plac e fi n ish in th at heat , was declared th e d a y's ov erall victor. Rob Norgaard (C Z ), R ich Th orwaldson (S uz) and Hoov er fi nish ed behind winner Wilson. Allen Cooke, a no th er of th ese lightnin g rods o n a Tex Myer s special , hung a loss on Junior-rated rid ers in a divi sion of b o th 12 5 a nd 250cc's. T h is youngst er would seem to b e quit e a threat , in th e not-to o-far fu ture, fo r a so lid Senior statu s. R on Stephenson ( Ric) was the overall win ner in the 100cc J u nio r fling; while Fr ed Mathews o n a Suzuki, ran off and hid fro m a stout division of 125 's , R obin Clark and Tom Slagle, b o th of whom were CZ'mount ed, a ccou n t ed for o veral l victories in the two remaining divisions o f 25 0cc Juniors. Whil e Steve Brown (Mai) t o ok t he measure of Steve Beb eck (Mai) and Jerry Beaman (CZ ) as he took home the largest troph y fo r Op en Juniors.
