P.S. Doe s anybody e is e do t hi s ? FROM LUCE R NE VALLEY , CAL" Jan. 23 , 1972 - OCMC used a unique smog-free 'smoke bomb' to start today's 100 mile Hare Scrambles. T he device consisted of a dozen o r so foot-wide strips of bright orange (na t ch ) dacron cloth stretched between two u prigh t poles. The 'bomb' remained visable and up righ t in spite of the strong winds that blew all weekend. I propose a gold star for the OC:'IC member who thought it up and two gold stars for the person who had the foresight to run those same strips of orange cloth down the guy wires. That last item was so effective that not even the Novices ra n o ver the guy wires ! The Number One p late made its first appearance this season attached to J .N. Roberts' Husky. As we h ave all seen J .N. ride 50 mil es in less than an hour, pit crews started wondering what had happened as II :0 0 rolled around and no riders had ap peared over the hill. But the course was a real challenge, ta king J .N. an h o ur and twenty-five mi nu tes to make the first loop . A few minutes behind J.N ., Larry Bergq uist, J er o m e Ru zuka and Steve Ellswort h, in th at order, came charging through the pits. Experts and Amateurs poured through by the h undreds, fo llowed by droves of Novices bent o n des tructio n. There was a road crossing at this point and I am happy to rep ort that it was we ll marked and OC !\IC stationed a vigo ro us flag-waver there. Seems nobody believes danger markings and it takes a red flag to let them know there is a bad get-off com ing u p. It took J .N. R ob ert s a full three h o urs to co m p let e both loops of this b ike-eater, an d small wonder it took so lo ng wi th BOTH of his tires flat ! J.N . was really entusiastic abo ut the course. " It has a real r o ugh one," he said , grinning. And , " No , I think it was an honest 49 or 50 miles; it took so lo ng because it was so rough:' J .N. also expressedhisdelight with the new ' sm o ke bomb'. "You could see it all day Satu rd ay. It saved a lo t of wandering around searching fo r a pi le of tires." Two minutes behind J .N., Larr y Bergquis t ch arg ed d own th e fi nish chute to take second o verall and first 250, fo llo w ed by second 500 Expert, Bruce Dunford who thought the course was, "Urn , all right:' Art Knapp ro de h is Tracy-tuned Husky to fourth overall and admitted he was tired, "But it was a real rider's course." Geo rge Walker (Kaw) looked a little beat when he crossed the finish line fifth overall. "It was a long ride," he said. In contrast t o George was Tom !\Iuto (Hus) sixth overall who said the course was too short, but I suspect Tom was teasing me. Seventh overall, Dusty Coppage (Yam) said he really dug the co urs e. "The rougher they are," sayd Dusty, "The better I lik e them." Dusty was followed by Mike Patrick, "The Deser] Fox" (Yam) who managed t o finish eighth even though he had run out of gas, Steve Ellsworth (Bu l] was running fourth through the pits, but it seems he got lost and w he n he found the co urse again five riders had swooped by him , p u tt ing h im n in th overall and second 250 Expert. I've heard Suzuki will run quite a way wi thout any o il getting to the crank and Morris N onnan proved it today by bashing h is oil injection against rocks until it broke open. Morr is finished 10th o verall in spite of his lac k of oil and a footpeg that was bent beyond recognition. " It was a bitchin' course," Morris said. First Amateur was A.C. Bakken (H us) followed by another lightweight, :0<0. 3x and second Amateur Curtis Willis (BSA) . Understatement Expert, Bill Friant (Puc) was first divis ion two ligh tweigh t (or 1 75) Expert. Bill admitted th e course was, "A little rocky:' First Dinosaur (650 Tri) , third Amateur and 15 th overall was J erry Staniford. Jerry was part of the crew that put up the powerlines in this area an d it lo o ks like knowing all the rocks by th eir first nam es came in handy today. Righ t behind Jerry S. was the fourth Amateur, Jerry Skipper (Hus), fo llo wed by the second 175 Expert AI Wurtzel (P uc) . Twenty minu tes behind J .N . • Cordis Brooks (Hod) crossed the fin ish line.
