BEGINNER TURNS F TEST' L AT BAY MARE AS AP Bv Art Cox MOOR PARK , CAL., Jan. 23 , 1972 An all-jun io r day of m oto cr oss produced the lar gest ga thering of competi to rs th at Bay Mar e Race Track has seen in several mo nth s. Ri ding fo r 5 0% trophies, th e classes wer e d ivided by racing experience. Divisio n one co ns ist ed of those with und er five race s total ex pe rience, and Division two grouped the more p roficient riders. All classes were run for three m o tos. Th e IOOcc Division one riders came in all shapes and sizes. There were "wee" tots and "biggies" running t ogeth er . Dan Gran t, on a Yamaha, left everyone beh ind in his first and third mo to to take first overall. Tony Porto (Hod) grabbed second trophy, with a third goi ng t o Yamah a youngster Scott N ..... thro ugh the picket fence with nothing Cl hurt b ut pride. Winning first overall was .: Charlie Angle (Yam) . Jeff Black and Do n Carlson also on Yamahas won "second and third . Sect ion B of the 125cc Divisio n o ne f;@ rider pro d uced a tie for first between ~ J anene Pennington (Bul) an d w DKW-mounted Steve Sparks. Ke nt d Ro llin s (A.E) and Scott Farris (Puc) ~ took second and third. U The 125 Division one, Section B class was won by Dennis Ha ile ridi ng a Woodland Hills Sportcycle Bultaco. Second h on ors went to Steve Ranson (Puc) . Another Bultaco rider, Kevin Tucker grabbed third. A great rider wit h less th an five races experience, Jon Smith (Mai), took home the large number one overall trophy in th e 250cc Division one class. The seasoned Division two group produced th e best and most consistent Novice competitor seen at Bay Mare re cently. Jim Hale on an extremely fast Bultaco, riding fo r Woodland Hills Sportcycle to o k three wins for a runaway first p lace overall . Second spot brass went to Scott Hartley (CZ) with 2 ,4,5. Byron Hendricks (CZ) took home a third overall. Hang on to your hats for this one! With less than five races experience, Husqvarna jockey Gary Lunsford, competing against other beginners in the Open class turned in faster lap times than the more proficient Open Junior class riders. Lunsford, showing good style and smoothness won his class easily with a I, I, 1. Here's a rider that bears watching! Bill Kelly finally removed the training wheels from his super fast Husky and poured it on while s tayin g on the saddle to take first overall with three fine rides. Kell y finished 1,2, 1 in the open Junior class for experienced motocrossers, Kell y is a m ember o f the "Sportsman Committee" that has been established to represent all riders competing at Bay Mare. Next weekend there will be another "All Junior Day" (beginners and seasoned Novices) at Bay Mare with 50% t rophies going to all classes. (Results on p age 28) Moreland. Riding in the IOOcc Division two class, the top th ree winners were Jim Gaffa (Hod), Reg English (Hod) and Morgan Ma locco (Yam). The I 25 cc Division one, section A ri ders, all saw no thing b u t the back of Brian McQuade's helme t for two motos, but McQuade tangled with another rider co ming into the finish lin e straightaway. Of tha t number, only th ree riders, all of whom w ere in d ivisio ns for beginners, were ab le to motocross gra nd-slams. The three racers with three-for-three wins were Guy J aegers (Yam), Dou~ Wheeler (AJS) in the 250cc class, and Paul Linleaf, who trouned the Open Beginners. Jaegers, who was doing his racing among the I25cc bunch with less than three rnotos experience, track-eentered his roaring machine while reco rd in g lap clockings in an incredib le 1 :3 2 .9 0 - just a few ticks removed from the best 125 Senior rounds! Mike Marsh, while h us tling his Husqvarna in the ranks of the Open Novices, accounted for a 3 -1 -3 tabulation in his th ree heats; enough to assure him . the dav's overall victory. Jim Cunningham, who, after grabbing a I :32 lap in winning the 250cc plus four, division "A" first mo to, would have appeared to have had an easy romp in the makings, became a victim of racing circumstances in the crew's second heat, when the black flag came out with jolt in ' Jim again in the lead . On the restart, Cunningham had trouble in getting his CZ to full-bore, thereby handing the overall positions to Mike Davies (Ric) , Don Anderson (Bus) and Bob Baldwin (AJS) . Lynn Stokey, a Maico rider with two st raight wins in the other 250cc division for the more exp erienced Juniors , had mu ch the same lu ck as Cunningham. It wasn't his day.
