Blackwell th en re turned and easily swept the final two mo to s wi th Grossi second in each. Sanders , Corb ett, and Goade, shared the w in ner 's circle with th eir resp ec ti ve victories in fe a tu re even ts , b ut it was more th e man n er of th eir triumphs th an the win it sel f th at was wo rth n otin g. Goade, com ing from fourth on th e first lap, m oved in t o th e runner-up p os iti on o n th e sec o nd lap o f th e 6-lap Main b ehind Sanders (Ka w). A t this p oi nt. Goad e called o n all hi s best efforts and for th e next two laps gave San ders all th e pressure he co uld handle , and then some, as h e ed ged in to th e lea d o n t he fo urt h lap t o stay. Fo llo wi ng both riders ac ross the finish lin e wa s, Corbett (Bul) , R on Pow ell (Bul) , Barr y Love (Suz) , Rudy Williams (Bul) , and Jim Mill er (Oss) . In th e 2 50 TI Main , it was Corbett all the way leadin g Sanders fo r six laps to score h is second win in-a-row in this class. Corbett 's performance was ju st as flawl ess as o ne can get . and a fter th e race, Corbett stated, " If y o u want t o b ea t Sander s. you ca n ' t a ffo rd t o make any m ist akes. He is o ne o f th e t oughest t o bea t. " Th ird was Go ade fo llo wed by Lo ve, Chris Smith (:\lon), Powell (Bul), and Mark Revels (Bul). Th e 100 TI Main saw five riders spill in tw o separate tan gles o n th e first lap, bu t all escap ed an y seri ous injury. On the restart, Sanders , who accou nted for three feature w ins, jumped t o an earl y lead and that was enough to beat th e likes of Steve Okuda (Kaw), A llen "Buckwheat " Swett (Hon). The p rev io us fast ru n o n th is bike was 9.88 seconds a t j ust o ver 141 mph. Bill Hahne, p ilo t of th e b ig do ub le , made several runs to find a good traction area o n th e starting lin e. After finding the position he th ough t best , Hahne made o ne fu ll-on run and tu rned 9.73 se conds a t 144.69 mph . Amazingly en ough, the bike and rider can go even better. Alth ough several b ike s were d ebuted in this well attended race , the tw o m ost unusual bikes t o enter we re, Ralph Muldoon and his 900cc fu el inj ect ed Honda 4 fu nny b ike. This o ne -of-a-kin d bike is com p let ely street legal with a hom, ligh ts a nd rear view mirror. In order to get the nitro-methane fuel to the c ombusti on ch am ber a 20,000 Hilborn injection system is emplo yed . More on this bike at a later date. The second major debut was th e Robert E. Schrniedeke-owned turbo charged Honda 750 . This bike is so quiet yo u wou ld n o t believe it is ru n ning. Bob also a nno unced the availab ility o f th e turb o ch arger in a kit form for $650 . In n orma l handicap brac ket racing , the word was o ut t ha t Lions was th e p lace t o be . T o m ake th e com petitio n a littl e rough er, th e Long Beach Hon da p eop le p ut up a Safe Guard b ike p ro tector and transmitt er alo ng wi th Lio n's p urse of $4 0 . A m ong the racers were J eff Berry, The Ac t io n 4 t eam, a nd Troy Pu geu s o n a 13 second fu ll d ress 74 , and man y o thers. At th e concl usio n of th e final ro und of racin g, Jim Sickenson of th e Actio n 4 team ran a 14 .26 to defeat Dennis Fry er's 838cc B/Gas Ho nda 4 . The 12 5 F.T . :\Iai n was h igh ligh t ed b y Doty torm enting Sa nders with h is consis te nt p ro bing t o grab th e lead, but t o n o ava il as Sanders scored his fourth fea t ure win of the eve ning over Doty, Cr ecel iu s, Vern Maxwell (Bul) , and Greg Mit ch ell (Ya m) .
