M Hart, Tripes in CMC Showdown CARLSBAD , CAL. , Jan. 9 , 1972 - Tim Hart an d Marty T ripes put on a spar kling sh ow at Calr sb ad Sunday . The motocrossers spli t wins in th e first two m o to s, Tripes taking th e first. Hart took off in the lead in the seco nd moto, leavin g Tripes d ead last . The amazing Tripes worked up to seco nd p lace before the five- lap race was over to p ut h im sel f in a de adlock for the overall win. T he tiebreak er went to Tripes. Hart stayed with him for a wh ile but fade d slightly at the end. Hart did h ave th e b est day am ong the Experts h owever , add ing to th e 250 class second , h e be at th e hustling Gary Harris for a win in th e 5 00 clas s. Mark Nohr led m ost o f th e way in the first 500 Exper t m oto until Hart got b y on th e last lap. Harris stalled in th e firs t turn and started th e race in de ad last . Fr om appearances th e Haw aiian was kn ocked cold o r in so much pain he could n't move. Fortunately h e was fully rec overed b y the time the ra ce was halted and briskl y made it over to th e sta rting gate fo r th e restart. He won that rac e and the nex t o ne h andi ly. Tim Hart finished behind a p air of top riders, getting a second to DeS oto in the 500 class and to Bill Payne in th e 250 's. Payne led a three-Maico sw eep o f th e 250 class to ge t firs t ove rall. Hart was ab le to b eat Darrell Allen a fte r All en led WIL~lINGTON, Ron Blanto n, second 250 I ntermediate, beats C. Tom Bro ok s and Sam Lop ez p laced one-tw o in the firs t mo tos , then tangled in the th ird o ne , mak ing an unsi gh tly he ap in th e fir st turn. Bro o ks go t go ing first , c ouldn't straigh ten an ailing shifter an d j ust push ed his bike across th e finish lin e. He t ook h ome a fir st overall for himself and Carabela. H ~ d id a fair job w ith th e exception 01 some stupid remarks about Mexican steel when Bro o ks pu sh ed h is Carab ela across th e line. Darrell Prim ro se should have stayed home Friday nigh t. He was victimized by an over-en thusias tic Junio r wh o ex ited a co m er comp lete ly o u t of co n trol a nd lea ned way ove r. T he tyro stayed lean ed over o n th e st raigh taway with only th e wind h oldin g him up until he came alo ngside Pri mr ose a nd gratef ull y lea ne d h is bi ke against Primro se's. Primr o se trie d to ge t away bu t cou ldn' t. He was be ing used as a bike sta nd at 30 mph and the lea ne r's handlebars were stuck around the leanee's so me place carbure tor. They final ly collapsed and th e lean er d usted himsel f off and rode away without a backward glance. Primr o se was treated on the spot fo r a painful hand inju ry. Terry Trach y h ad th e top Junio r day by far, win n ing four races and finis hi ng no worse th an third to win overall in a d ivisio n of b oth th e 2 50 and 500 classes. John Brust, B. Breker a nd Mike ~I aru n ia k all d omina ted th eir Junior divisions with three winning rid es. T rip es announced t his was his last rid e on a CZ as h e is swi tc hi ng to Yamaha. He wi ll rid e stock bikes fo r the ne x t fe w months and will be fu rn ished th e Yamaha m otocr oss prototypes in Ap ril. Trip es exp resse d his satisfa ction wit h CZ but said h e just could n' t tum d own the Yamaha o ffe r. "T h ey w ill fu rn ish me expense money to ge t t o th e race s, th e bikes and sp ares, videotape eq u ip me nt t o ana lyze my e ffo rts and T or sten Hallman will b e tuning th e machines.
