I, 1972 - A record entry of 314 were flagged off the line at noon for the 7-mile dash to the summit of Pikes Peak. For the second year th e Snow Run had no snow and the top was swiftly made. A battle to the finis h p ro d uced a win for Scott Harris on h is Triumph Metisse. In Scott's rooster tail ca me Don Pa lmgren on a fr esh RT-2 MX Yamaha. Rumors proved to be just that when Colorado's newest hero, Malcolm Smith, fai led to show in the line up. The line up a t Glen Cove went just fine anyway. with the classes being grouped with the fastest riders in the fron t group. Surprisingly, the whole field got away without a major pile-up. Palmgren moved into the lead but was slowed momentarily by a possible mi ld seizure. 250cc Yam ah a-m o un t ed Bill Osthoff, th e third pl ace finisher, and Harris p assed him. Palm gre n 's under-jetted Ya maha h ealed q uic kly and t h e chase was on. At Bottom less Pit the three were well ahead of the rest. Pa lmgren powered p as t Os thoff but failed to pass th e determined Harris. If the mountain was a thousand feet higher th e leaders wo uld have had reason to worry. Out of th e second starting group came Gale Gieck , an Amateur rider o n a 400 Suzuki. Starting behind all the 250-and·up Expert riders, he charged past them to finish fourth, only six seconds behind Harris, and a full minute ahead of second in his class. Kidd takes Tarrant's first indoor S.T. By Dodie Stingley FORT WO RTH, TEX., Dec. 18, 197 1 The beautiful and lu x ur io us Tarrant County Convention Center usually reserved for singing stars, beauty pageants, ice capades and such, took a new twist Saturday night as ~1. 1. Watkins and Don Kidd presented to the public for the first time at the center, indoor short track motorcycle races. Three more big races are scheduled for the center, the next being held Jan. 15, and two in February. In t he 250 class AI Baker from California gave Mike Kidd some good competition as he grabbed the lead and held it for five laps but Kidd got around him and finished first in the first heat. Jon . li n o n n o looked mighty good in one heat as he held the lead over Baker. Mi ke Ki dd (72n) won both the 200 and 250 class. Barry Patrick pushed Kidd hard all the way for the trophy dash and almost got him on the finish, bu t Mike came in first.
