' About 55 riders rode through mud puddles ab out a foo t deep and grooves as deep as 2 111 feet. About hal f o f the entir es in eac h class were ab le t o fin ish th e r ace. With broken chains, th rottles, and messed -up sp ark p lugs , man y o f ' t h e bi k es were dis abled b ef ore the fi nis h . With nearly p erfect coord inatio n of man an d machine, Jay Stradley fle w ar ound th e tra c k with th e greatest o f ease. Jay managed to hit th e 2111-fo ot gro ove o nly once in th e firs t h eat, but b ounced b ack o u t o f it with out los in g any time. Gary Howard was cl ose behind him, h it the gr oove, m ir ed it"in the mud , and lost his positi on. In the sec ond mota, J ay started the race in fourth position , t ook o ver th ird b efore the start of the second lap - fle w passed every o ne in the second lap for the top, sp ot. He missed a tire , stopped, went aro und it and still held the lead to the fi nish . There was three' ridersIef't in the third moto. Three big Huskies Robert Calvert, Brent Hogan, and Stradley . Jay flew in t o th e lead immediately to start th e Open Novice/Amateur/Expert cl ass. He was number one all the way. He had a slight delay when h e spun out in a mud hole as he was lapping Hog-an, but to ok it in to the checkered flag unchallenged. When the "Dirty Old Man's Race" started, it was snowing a nd sleetin g at th e same time. Only three riders were entered, but they wouldn't let the race b e calle d off. J im Creech, Brent H ogan, and T om Dill in g b ra ved it out to th e end , with Hogan in first, T om Dill in g second, and Jim Cree ch b rin gin g up t he rear. All in all , the rider s should b e congra tu lat ed for their courage an d st amina. It t ook a lot of gu ts a nd true sportsmanship t o fight th e ele men ts today .' The sk y was 'sun n y an d clear and 12 5 rider; we re en ter ed in th e com petitio n . Someth in g n ew w as added t oday : A three-wh eeled motorcy cle event. J oe T o mich ra n o ff a nd left th e res t of th e guys. He was r idi ng a Dune Cycle. Re d T hompson's Harley 45 stalled a t the start and h e reall y p oured it o n t o ca tc h up t o Tomich. He co uld n ' t q uite make it , b u t fi nis hed in second p lace. T he on ly girl en try , Elain e Mille r , ro lled h er Honda and was out of the race. Very few riders, regardless o f th eir status, w en t home today withou t an extra helping o f th e Feather River bottom m ud o n their bodies , d eposited b y di re ct co ntact with o ld Mother Earth . Only four riders turned in p er fect scores. One of them did it twice, Carl _Cran ke. He was only challenged by o ne rider ·all day lon g" 125 Expert Lonnie Forman of Yuba Ciiy.'L o n nie fell d own in the third mota but still managed t o get overall second. Cranke came back in th e 250 Expert class and did it allover agai n. Bob Harvey of Concord turned in a p erfect sc o re in the Open Novic e class. It was a big day for him. This wa s th e first time in three y ears o f racing he has co m e up with"an overall first: need less to say he was h appy ab out it. Seve ral hundred spectators also braved the near-sn ow weath er to watch all the nuts go aro un d and ar o und on t h e mile-long c ourse. ' Bob Bowers o f San ta Cru z stole the show fr om th e factory AJS rider Vic Eastwood, who ca me up t o co nd uc t a motocr oss sch ool a nd ride th e event. During t h e fir st mota Eastwo od's bike broke down. He was o u t fo r severa l laps and only came back t o race the la st few . Bowers wan th at mota easily with Don Stover taking second . During the second mota Eastwood ran aw ay from the rest of the riders an d Bob took second with Stover finish in g third. With a bad showing th e first mota Vic did n ot have enough points" to take a trophy. Bowers to ok the win ; he really has the gr eat style o f anoth er Bob from Santa Cruz wh om w e all missed at the race . Carl Cranke had an excellent d ay by winning b oth th e 12 5 and 250 class wi th Eddie Brown fr om Lakeside Honda making a challenge in the fir st , He led fr om th e star t un til abo u t hal fw ay when h e came by the finish lin e and hooked hi s peg in a tir e and went down hard, le tting Carl t ake the wi n . In th e 250 Exp ert R on S toc kman was leadin g during h is firs t mota when Cranke tri ed t o p ass in tra ffic an d found th at in th e excite ment he had misjudged th e tum and h ad to b ra k e hard enough to loc k u p an d kill th e b ik e o n the fina l run to th e ch ec ker ed flag. Carl came b ack t o take th e win in the fi nal mota t o wi n o verall w ith S tockman fin ishin g second . .
