one stays kind of sharp wanting to train—the motivation is there. "We have the sprint enduro in the U.S. and that's the closest format [to Six Days]. Johnny and Layne were both racing that [this year]; obviously they were prepar- ing well for this. "The Europeans, they race En- duroGPs; they have their national enduro championships that are similar [in format]. We really don't have a series that everyone races like this, so we've just got to do better preparation on the riding part, I feel, so that when day one comes, we're not making small mistakes, we're used to the trac- tion of the [FIM-required enduro] tires and everything." For the U.S. JWT team, the week started well as they re- mained within striking distance of Italy until Walton crashed on day three. Though he finished the day, a trip to the hospital that af- ternoon ruled him out of the rest of the week due to injury so with all three scores counted for the team, the added three hours a day doomed them to the bottom of the heap. All in all, it was a good learning year. "Having a couple guys like Kai- lub Russell retire and Stew Baylor not being able to come [forced us to find] some other really good guys [but with less experience]. Now we have some guys that have more experience to come back and get back on top." U.S. Trophy Team Manager Antti Kallonen said, "Obviously, we came in with high hopes. I think we came with the best team we could assemble [this year]. Yes, we didn't win, but we're going to take some notes now and come back Rookie Preston Campbell ended up 10th in C1, the best of the Americans in the class. Campbell's father—Baja legend Johnny Campbell—rode his only Six Days in Italy, as well, on an XR600R in 1997.
