Just before the halfway mark, Martin laid down a blistering 1:59.791 lap time, the fastest of the day for anyone in either class except for a 1:59.381 by Tomac in the second 450cc moto. Martin literally got right beside Lawrence a couple of times, but the Australian held strong, and then disaster struck for Martin. He got cross-rutted as he went to scrub a jump and could not get the bike straightened out before he landed. "J-Mart" crashed hard, coming down on his left wrist. The early prognosis was a broken arm and the end of his injury-plagued 2021 campaign. "It's just a bummer for sure," said Martin after he left the ners. He did not disappoint them out on the racetrack, as he was faster than anyone else from the moment he first got on the track for timed qualifying until the drop of the last checkered flag. At the start of the first moto the primary combatants for the title, Lawrence and Justin Cooper, started at the front, with Red Bull KTM rookie Max Vohland and the veteran Jeremy Martin giving chase. Martin, who had won three overalls to date in the series, but had missed a round with a broken hand, dispatched both Vohland and his Star Racing teammate Cooper to go after Lawrence, who had taken over the lead on lap three. Chase Sexton was fifth overall, while Coty Schock posted a career-best sixth-place finish on the FXR Chaparral Honda. Schock ran 8-6 in the two motos, which was much different than last year's finish hereā€”and on a much hotter day. "Ironman was a hot and humid one," Schock said.
