total of 22 riders made the cut for
the Superbike grid.
Triumph Daytona SportBike racer
Elena Myers broke her right collarbone in a qualifying crash on Friday
and that kept her out of action at
Barber. It was somewhat of a blow
to the event, which is sponsored by
Triumph and was largely promoted
on Myers' story. She also ecently
moved to Alabama. Myers said she
didn't intend to let a broken bone
keep her out of action for long. "It
was rider error," Myers said of her
crash. "I went over with a little too
much brake and highsided to the
inside going into the Museum turn.
It was a weird crash." As for her recovery time Myers said, "We plan
to do surgery on Tuesday morning
to put a plate in and I'm looking to
be back for Mid-Ohio," she said,
referring to the next road race on
the calendar on July 12-14.
Both races came
down to battles
between Hayes (2)
and Hayden (54).
And both wins
went to Hayes.
then some, because I let Larry
[Pegram] in front of me and then
resumed racing and I said, 'Well,
we'll see what happens.' I was
confident I had given up my advantage that I may have gained
and reset. I basically waited to
the end of lap one, maybe even
lap two before I reset and said
'Okay, here we go. Now let's
start racing.' When I saw the plus
five I wasn't too surprised and it
was just a matter of me putting
together the best race I could at
that point."
Cardenas finished a distant
third and the two-time Daytona
SportBike Champion almost
seems resigned that he'll not be
able to hold off Hayes for much
longer in the points chase. When
asked if there is a point where he
thinks it's critical to start winning
races Cardenas replied, "Since
Daytona is that point, but unfortunately we haven't been able to do
it yet, but every time we try."
Sunday's race had a much
cleaner start with Herrin getting the early jump, only to be
Roger Lee Hayden made a humorous remark in Saturday's post-race
press conference. He talked about
a well-known backmarker getting in
his way on the final lap of the race.
"It would have been nice if Johnny
Rock Page would have gotten out
of the way," Hayden said. "I know
he got the meatball [flag] up there.
On the long right-hander I had to
pass him on the outside in turn two.
Maybe he's got a medical card for
that one too," Hayden said referring to Page's acknowledged past
use of medical marijuana.
The knock on Josh Herrin is he's
good when he has someone to
chase, but falls apart once he's in
the lead or running without a rider
to judge off of in front of him. While
