LOOKING BACK
A photo of 500cc AMA National MX Champion Chuck Sun leading
500cc FIM World MX Champion Andre Malherbe at the Carlsbad
U.S. GP was on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago. Sun was the
overall winner with 5-1 motos, while Brad Lackey took second overall
with a 6-3. Broc Glover won the first moto but got taken out early in
the second moto for a 1-11. Donnie Hansen topped Johnny O'Mara
for the 250cc Support-class victory... Nick Richichi won the GNC
Road Race at Loudon.
Bart Markel chalked up his 28th career National win at the Charity Newsies
Half-Mile in Columbus, Ohio, 50 years ago. The win was significant,
because it broke Joe Leonard's career win record. Gary Scott finished
ahead of Kenny Roberts for the Junior Main win... The Europeans arrived
for the first round of the Inter-AMA Motocross Series at Indian Dunes.
Czechoslovakian Vlastimil Valek was the overall 250cc International-class
winner, but the local fans were thrilled to see American Gunnar Lindstrom
take second. Lars Larsson won the 500cc National.
