LOOKING BACK
Kent Howerton clinched the 250cc AMA National Motocross
Championship 40 years ago and was featured on the cover from
Colorado, where he sealed the deal. Bob Hannah and Broc Glover won
the 250cc and 500cc classes, respectively, that day... It was a thriller in
Indiana, where Hank Scott nipped number-one plate holder Randy Goss
to win the Indy Mile... Frank Stacy topped the Last Chance One-Day
ISDE Qualifier in Livingston, Tennessee... We took a close-up look at the
bikes of the 500cc National Motocross Championship.
In our "biggest issue ever" at 56 pages, we featured motocross on the
cover 50 years ago in preparation for the "European invasion" which was
set to begin the following week at Indian Dunes. We took a look at who was
coming, and which Americans stood the best chance against the Euros...
We tested the $1149 Rickman 250 Moto-Cross bike. Our conclusion? We
said it was 203 pounds of dynamite... We featured part one of our series on
learning the rules of enduro racing and how to keep time.
