25 MARVIN MUSQUIN 7TH (8-7) 450MX "I knew compe on would be very tough and a good start would be key," said Marvin Musquin. "I was happy with my prac ce, qualifying second, and felt good going into the motos. In both of my motos, my first lap was no good and I was not aggressive enough and making huge mistakes. A er that, I had to fight back but it was very difficult to make passes on this track. I was ba ling with Tomac in both motos, so that tells you the level of compe on in the top-10. I'm not super happy with the result on paper." MYOWNRACE 1 ZACH OSBORNE 10TH (13-5) 450MX Defending 450MX Champion Zach Os- borne doesn't appear to be fully fit from a recent back injury, though he did put together a solid second moto with a fi h a er not being able to make amends for a bad start in moto one. "My day defi- nitely could have been be er, but I'm s ll healthy and looking to get more," he said. "The first moto was a li le disap- poin ng and not what we were looking for, but I turned it around and I'm happy to leave in a be er spot than I was when I got here. This is the first me I've done two motos in a day since I started riding again so we didn't have any expecta- ons and to get a top-five in the second moto was a step in the right direc on." narrow first-moto win over Honda's Chase Sexton and climbing through the pack after a so-so start in the second moto to take fourth and ice the overall. Second overall went to Honda's Ken Roczen who ran 6-1 on the day, with third going to Ferrandis' teammate Aaron Plessinger, another former 250MX Cham- pion who moved up to Star Racing's new 450MX effort. 450MX The 450MX class was so packed with talent that every rider in the top 10 at the end of the first lap of the first moto has won an AMA title in either SX or MX, or both. Monster Energy Kawasaki's Adam Cianciarulo, fastest in morning qualifying, passed newly crowned AMA Supercross Champion Cooper Webb for the early lead. Behind them were Ferrandis, Roc- zen, Sexton, Plessinger, KTM's Marvin Musquin, GasGas' Justin Barcia, defend- ing 450MX Champion Zach Osborne, and three-time 450MX Champion Eli Tomac. Cianciarulo looked fast and confident, and he began inching away from the field by clicking off the fastest laps of the day, including a blistering 2:18.407 on the third lap. But then on the fifth lap Cianciarulo caught his peg coming out of a corner and tumbled down the hill that followed, surrendering what was by then a nine- second lead to Webb, who, in turn, lost the lead on the very next lap to Ferrandis. Webb began his own slide back from there, as Sexton, the winner of the 450MX class at the last round in 2020, started pressing Ferrandis for the lead. The two VOLUME 58 ISSUE 22 JUNE 2, 2021 P73 Ferrandis (14) and Chase Sexton (23) finished the first 450MX moto this close. Sexton's late-race charge on the leader came up 0.099 seconds short. Ferrandis holds down second place ahead of Sexton, Adam Cianciarulo (9), Jason Anderson (21), Justin Barcia (51) and Marvin Musquin (25) at the start of first 450MX moto. Leader Cooper Webb is already gone.
