It was an emotional victory for Byrne as his wife was in surgery the morning of the race. "I went into the race a little bit happier than I have been for the past couple of days…" Bryrne said. "She called me just a few minutes before I headed off out for the warm-up lap and she said, 'I can't be there, but do a good job and be safe,' so that was a massive relief," Byrne said.
